Sick after workout?
If anyone has posted this before, I apologize. I couldn't find any threads that address my issue. :-)
Sooo I had RNY in Feb. I've recently joined a gym and am loving the workouts. However, about 20-30 minutes after I work out I am getting very sick. I am dry heaving, faint, dizzy, nauseous....etc. I have been eating a carb/protein snack about an hour or so before my workout and then am going for about 1.5 - 2hrs at the gym. I feel fine during the exercise and I am not exercising too hard.
It seems that after I get sick, if I eat like 2 animal crackers it improves the nausea but not the dizziness and such. My NUT said I should be getting 1400-1500 cals per day. I don't even know if that is possible ...I get about 800-1000.
So, my questions are .... what should I be eating before/after my workout and how long before or after? Also, how in the world do those of you who have had RNY get 14-1500 cals per day? I am 7 months out and just don't know if that is possible. wht kinds of things do you eat?
Thank you for your help!!

First I'd say that you are probably needing an electrolyte replacement drink to drink during workouts like G2 or I drink VitaminWater Zero. I was having the same issues and was told it was dehydration. Prior to my workout I eat a carb rich food like whole wheat toast & peanut butter or a banana. Within an hour from your workout you need to get in a protein rich plus carbohydrate fueled food to replace those lost as this will keep your metabolism going and keep you burning cals well after your workouts.
Good Luck!

It sounds a lot like "reactive hypoglycemia". I periodically get this nausea, sweaty, tunnel vision feeling about an hour after eating a significant amount of carbs. It happens because your body puts out insulin to deal with the carb load you had prior to exersise and because of the exersise your body uses the carbs. for energy and then your blood sugar drops...a lot, and you get the symptoms. You might find it less a problem if you take in some kind of complex carb. or protein before a workout and then soon after. When our body's become more lean and less fat, that fat source of energy is not available. I've just been reading that a good glass of fat free milk or chocolate milk is a good post work out drink. It offers all the necessary rebuilding blocks our muscles need after a workout.
Check out "reactive hypoglycemia", there are a few places on OH that discuss it.
Hope that helps...Debbie.
