Need suggestions
ok.. I am 3 months out and havent started excercising yet. After only losing 5 lbs over the last month I think it's time I start. So, my question is....... I want to tone my arms (lots of extra skin here) what are the best type of excercises for the arms and toning them? I have a gym membership and could hire a personal trainer but right now I can't afford it. So any suggestions here would be great... I already know about the cardio but its the weight lifting I need help with.... Thanks a bumch
Hi Mommy!
I was an at home mom for 10 years. Savor every moment, I promise you'll miss these days when they're over. I digress.
Try Jillian Michael's 30 day shred. I never had so many muscles in my arms in life, ever. Not bulky, WWF, steroid type muscles though. It's less than a 30 minute workout, you can do it at home and only $8-$10 in Walmart, Target or Amazon.com.
I promise results.

This is the standard disclaimer.
If you have extra skin, no amount of exercise is going to fix it.
You can build some muscle under it, but skin itself won't tighten with exercise.
In order to reduce all the extra skin you would have to build an equivalent amount of muslce compared to the fat that was there before. And then you aren't reducing the skin, just filling up what's under it with muscle.
Most people have to have plastic surgery to remove excess skin. If you are lucky depending on genetics and how long you were over weight, some of it may go away.
However, building muscle will certainly help your metabolism as the muscle will help you to burn calories and help with your genral health.
If you haven't lifted weights before, start of nice and easy, don't overdo it and keep yourself healthy and motivated.

The first time you do something - It's going to be a personal record!
I downloaded Jillians video this evening (thanks for the suggestion) and I will try it tomorrow morning...
I know excercise/weight lifting wont get rid of my extra skin.. only plastics will do that... My problem is I only lost 5 lbs in the last month and wanna give my body some help.... I am very much a couch potato and believe this is why I havent lost more.

Doing some weightlifting every 2-3 days will help as it tones your muscle. You will also build some muscle and improve your strength, and increase your metabolism so that you burn more calories at rest.
However as a tool to promote weight loss, the effect can be very gradual.
It's still a great idea to do weightlifting!
But, if you want to see the weight come off faster, there are easier ways.
Consider starting a fitness walking program to get a weight loss boost.
Walking is easier than you think, plus it's what our bodies were designed to do.
If you can build up to 45 - 60 minutes of walking, 5 days/week, you could lose an extra pound of body fat per week. That's prety good!
In fact, all I did was start walking every day at lunch, instead of sitting at my desk, and I lost all my excess weight! Now I'm at my ideal weight and can't believe how much walking has helped!
It's like God's gift to us, so we should take advantage of it.
Also, you will not just lose weight, but you will feel better emotionally and physically!
I have posted a great beginner, intermediate, and advanced walking routine on my site below.
Walking is free, so I strongly recommend you consider giving it a try and see how it changes your life. But whatever you decide to do, I wish you the best of luck.
You will find an excellent Fitness Walking program on my workout routines web page:

I haven't used these yet, but two ladies at church used resistance bands for their arms. They used an old Richard Simmons video that came with the bands. Both of them had KILLER arms and shoulders after about 4 or 5 weeks. I know that you can buy the bands at Walmart for about 10 bucks. You could probably find a lot of exercises using the bands on the internet.
If you are trying to up your weight loss, the best way to do it is to combine cardio with strength training. If you belong to a gym, you have tons of cardio options -- stationary bike, treadmill, elliptical, group classes -- and there should be machines you can workout with even without a personal trainer. For example, the 24 Hour Fitness I used to belong to had some posters on the way showing you how to do a quick circuit of specific machines that would exercise all your muscles by the time you were done.

Hi Mommytwo, you can incorporate some simple exercises in your daily routine to get toned arms. I just went ahead and posted an article on my blog at http://www.obesityhelp.com/member/bodyman/blog/2010/09/17/how-to-get-toned-arms/
Your personal trainer at the gym will also be able to help you out. Cardio exercises work well for the whole body, so to tone your arms you need to start exercises which are specific for that area.
