new to this forum, and exercise
hi,
i'm christina and you can ususally find me on the LW or SBAAWLS boards. i'm new to exercising. i've never really liked it much although there have been periods in my life where i was more fit than others.
i really want to get in better shape. i belong to a gym and try to go about 3x/week, although i don't always make that number. i pretty much exclusively do spin class, ab work and light weights for my arms. other than not being able to run due to knee issues, i don't have any physical restrictions. i really enjoy yoga and swimming although i don't do them as often.
so my main question is for those of you who never exercised before WLS and now have grown to love it. how did you make that change? i don't need to love it, i will be happy with liking it. at this point i still see it as a chore and i want to change my mindset. i want to actually enjoy it.
thanks

For me the transformation came when exercise became part of my social life. I joined a running group and the people in the group became my friends. We get together for long runs on Sunday mornings. I also get a lot of satisfaction reaching new milestones. Sometimes, the focus is on a longer distance or a faster time or tackling a new skill. I'm fortunate to have many people that I can depend on for company when I run, bike or swim. I do some of my workouts alone. But, I seek company whenever I can.

Unlike Cassie, I have no running friends but I do lots of races. Most of my running revolves around goals that I have set for myself. My goal right now is to run at least a mile a day for a year. I am three months away with an average of about 2.9 miles a day. Many of the goals are time related of distance related. For me, finding goals is what it's all about. I am thinking about a half marathon a month for next year. It's all about the goals.

I started out slow and made what I did a habit. Then I added in more and made that a habit. So at first I went to the gym 1-2x a week. Then 2-3x. Then 4-5x.
The other thing is that I started out doing things that I love to do and not things that I 'ought' to do. People will run because "running is great exercise" but they hate running so they stop. It's better to not run and do something else that you love and won't stop IMO even if technically it's not as great an exercise.
Finally, I started signing up for things... charity bike rides, races, and other athletic events. These gave me something to train for and a reason that I couldn't just skip exercise that week. Because, if I did, I wouldn't be ready and wouldn't have a good experience.
