Question about calories and exercise

I'm at 5 months out and just started working out with a personal trainer.  It feels great and I want to continue, but I'm a little concerned about my caloric intake.  I eat anywhere from 700-1000 calories a day.  My trainer wants me to eat more carbs and at least 1200 calories.  I've only had three session with her so far, so I'm not sure how it's affecting my weight loss.  Any thoughts on whether I should up my calories ? Carbs ?  I don't want to hurt myself, but I don't want to stop losing weight either.

Your trainer is comming from a workout perspective and probably has limited knowledge of the surgery. At less than 5 months out you need to consentrate more on the nutrition aspect of your new life. If you want to ask your surgeon what they think, go for it but I think you need to wait a bit before listning to your trainer.

In other words, revolve your exercise around the surgery and not your surgery around your exercise.

I agree....I am only a little over 5 weeks out....but my trainer and I have talked very candidly about surgery and calories.  He and I have worked together for a little over 3 years, so he's seen my struggle with weight, and he sees that I had put in the work of workout, cardio, weights, diet, upping calories, lowereing them, eating protein, eating carbs, eating squared meals...you name it we've done it.

When I decided to have surgery he's been supportive and has also read up on the surgery and nutritional aspects of post surgery life.

He and I have talked about caloric intake, but also we've both come to realise that I have over 100lbs of stored calories on my body, so that is 350,000 calories that I need to burn in order to lose 100lbs.  This means that I have to have a calorie defecit large enough to start the burn and use of that stored energy.

Follow your surgical nutritional guidelines, at first your  body may rebel and say it wants/needs more calories, but if you don't feed it, it will start using up  your stored energy as fuel......

Good luck...

Trainers are notorious for giving out nutritional advice without having the foggiest idea of what they are doing. I listen politely and then do what my program says.

My surgeon did up my protein requirements as my workout load went up, which did up my calories slightly. But I was working out 5 hours a week before he even started that and training for a Half-Ironman before I got to 1200 calories. I was also very close to a normal BMI at that point.
