which shoes do you all feel your best running in?  i recently bought some nike cross trainer type shoe.  the left one is rubbing up against the back of my ankle, and i don't realize it until i wake up from the soreness in the middle of the night.  i'm not sure why it doesn't occur on my right side.  your insight is definitely needed.  THANKS!

go to your local running store and get fitted for your running shoes.  The running store should watch you walk on a treadmill and then see how much support you need.  You will not get this service from a sports store like Dick's or Sports Authority.  So make sure this is a running store.

Hope this helps

Cross trainers are not good for running, but you can do just about anything in running shoes.  Expect to pay a little bit for the right shoes.  Mine are usually $90-$100.  The value in going to a running store and getting fitted are 2-fold.  First, you get the right shoe for you. Second, you reduce your risk of injury sine you're using the right equipment.

Best of luck!

Shane is right; I over pronate. My 1st pair were Saucony Hurricane 10's and I loved them. When I needed a new pair, they had the Hurricane 11's out and I didn't like them as much. I ended up getting Asics kyano gels. I also like the double socks.

Do the homework cause you need a great pair of shoes. Good luck in your quest!

I just want to second (or is that third or fourth) going to a running store and getting fitted properly.  I am flat footed and overpronate, and there are about 4 or 5 shoes that would work for me.  I also have wide feet and that narows my choices a little more.  I chose the New Balance-- I have two pair (one for inside running and one for outside).  They feel great and were well worth the price.  In fact, I am almost ready for a new set (a shoe will last you about 4-6 months depending on how much you run).

You will pay a little more, but you will be properly fitted and this will reduce the risk of injury or getting a shoe that could actually hurt you.  Go and get properly fitted and get a shoe that works for you foot and the way that you walk and run.

I don't walk, run, work, or play in anything but New Balance!

Look for a Fleet Feet in your area.  They are the experts.

A little shopping tip:

Since we all can't always afford the prices at the running store, here's a tip. If you go to the running store to get fitted, write down the recommendation. Then, purchase online and perhaps even the prior version of the shoe.

Example: I was recommended to buy the Saucony Omni 9. I tried it on and liked it. It was $110 at the running store. I found the Saucony Omni 8 online for $58.88 and I love them. They never felt new or uncomfortable.

Typically, I like to give the local guys my business, but the price difference was just too big in this case.
