Jogging, or running?

Okay, as a novice, my question is, when are you no longer jogging, and considered running? In my last post I said I was jogging because I wasn't going "fast", but the more I think about it, I feel like I was running slow. I could have gone faster just fine, but it was my first time on a treadmill in over a month, (and before then, I wasn't even going as fast as I was today).

So where to do define jogging and where do you define running?

For me, it's about 6  mph or 10 minute miles.  Slower than and I feel like I'm jogging and faster and I feel like I'm running.

For me, I feel like it's arbitrary.  I'm often running under 6mph - like a whole half marathon at 5.5 mph.  Am I not a "runner" because  didn't go a certain speed?  eh.

jogging vs running (again, in my mind) is more of a mindset difference, not a speed difference.  Jogging is something casual and carefree.  Running is purposeful and goal oriented.

I think you are going to find a lot of opinions on this - and they are all valid.  :)

I really like that way of thinking! I think you are so right. Just like in anything there are "slow" runners and "fast" runners, one is no less of a runner though right? If you are pushing it and feel like your running, then it must be running.

Right now running might be 5.5mph, and in a year it might be faster. That doesn't mean that I wasn't running now though, just because I might run faster then.

Thanks for this perspective!

Oh, there's a good quote...I'm going to try to find it, but it's something about if you have to question if you're a runner or a jogger, then chances are you're a runner.  Either way, you're kicking butt! :)

I am slow...12-13 minute miles but I still consider myself a runner.  I like the above comment about jogging being casual and running more purposeful.  I call what I do running even if somebody else might not :)

I've been "running" for a year now and at first I called it slogging.  It was a slow jog to start with.  I moved onto running when I finished my 2nd 5K at 3 minutes faster than my first.  I call myself a runner now, but my best mile is only about 11 mins.  I just decided to get myself up to a 10K at a local race in October, so I've gotten up to 5 miles in my training. 64 minutes for my last 5 mile run, so  a little over 12 minutes a mile.  My first 5 mile dropped to 14 minutes a mile.

I still call that a run because it certainly is sooooo much faster and farther than I ever thought I could get.

I've never made the distinction and I don't believe there is any real difference. If you aren't walking, you are running and that makes you a runner in my book.
