Knee pain

So last Friday, I tried to run sprints and my knee has hurt since. Not excrutiating pain. I took it easy over the weekend and it felt better than it did on Friday. I went on a hike last night and it hurt a little, then I ran for a couple of miles today and it started hurting pretty good to where I thought I should stop.

I really don't think it's anything serious to where I should go to the doc or anything. I just wondered if any of you have had little pains like this and what you did to get past it and on with the workouts. I'm doing a 5k in a month and I really need to be able to run right now. :(

I have some arthritis in my right knee. I can do walk/jog intervals on the treadmill at the gym,  but when I try to do it outside on the pavement it makes my knee hurt. I think it has something to do with being 50ish... I'm sure you'll get some good answers from the runnin' pros around here - maybe you could wrap it or something?

Good luck,

Jenny

You might be developing an overuse injury.... happened to me in the spring.  My pain was on the outside of knee, and eventually went right up the side of my leg.

I learned some stretches and strengthening exercises that helped a lot.

Just because you aren't hobbling doesn't mean you shouldn't see a doctor!  At the very least, google "Runner's knee" and see if any of the symptoms make sense.

Also, you probably want to ice your knee after any walking/running/hiking.

If you just had surgery in March, your knee is just pissed at you and is letting you know about it. After years of inactivity, you really have to ease into the running thing.

I would not do any speed work in the first 6 months after starting a running program. When it feels better, start slowly and ease into it. You have the rest of your life to try to better your times. An article in runners world said that the average person can improve their times for about 7 years after starting a program. Get a nice running base in before starting speed work.

You might want to make sure you have the right running shoes and/or that they aren't too old and also have your gait analyzed.

I second scott's comments. sprint training/HIITs are easy to overdue and pull something.

There are so many kinds of pain that unless you describe WHERE and HOW it hurts, we really can't help you much.  Knee pain is pretty common, but it's a lot harder to say whether you should get it looked at without a good description of what's happening.

I would suggest seeing if you can get a physical therapist look at you (many offer free consults) and also check out your running form.  Those two things can be very important and helpful.  Making sure you have the right shoes for the way you run can also be more help than you know.

Best of luck!

Thanks! The pain is just below the kneecap on the inside of the leg. I plan to go to the doc today and was hoping for a referral to physical therapy. I have excellent double-coverage insurance and I thought the same thing -- they could help me on my form to avoid future injury. :)
