Little plug for our team
It's mostly just a quick blurb about their program, but I did manage to get them to add a link about our team.
Weight-loss surgery offers hope to severely obese people
Anyone watching Scott Allen finish his fifth triathlon would never guess that, less than 3 years ago, he weighed over 440 pounds.
Likewise, Noah Bentley’s win of the California Triple Crown for completing 3 200-mile weekend bike rides (double centuries) in one season hardly suggests that his weight once topped 375 pounds.
Both men, each 42 years old today and weighing an identical 188 pounds, transformed from morbidly obese people to endurance athletes in just a few years. But first, each underwent weight loss (bariatric) surgery at our Richmond Medical Center as a last resort to begin losing weight.
“Weight loss surgery is not a magic bullet," says surgeon Aaron Baggs, MD, chief of Bariatric Surgery at Richmond. “It’s a drastic tool for weight loss, and it’s only effective with a commitment to a lifelong nutrition plan and physical activity routine."
Today, both Allen and Bentley enjoy an active lifestyle. In addition to running marathons, Allen is part of a group of post-operative bariatric patients who met online and formed a team of athletes at obesityhelp.com/group/Post_Op_PRs/ to promote healthy living.
Kaiser Permanente follows the National Institutes of Health (NIH) guidelines for weight loss surgery. Candidates are severely obese, with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater. Most have weight-related diseases, such as diabetes or hypertension.
Our Richmond Medical Center is the first Kaiser Permanente hospital in California to become a Certified Bariatric Surgery Center through the American College of Surgeons.

It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed.
Every morning in
It knows that it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve.
It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle
when the sun comes up you'd better be running.
