Fatigue during 70.3 training?

My training for the 70.3 has been going well.  I've been getting my workouts in and feeling healthy and strong.  But, fatigue set in big time this week.  I'm unsure if I should just put the time in at a lower intensity, maintain the intensity, but cut back the duration,  or just take an extra rest day.

I have eight weeks to go before the event.   Like many plans, mine builds volume for three weeks and then there's a recovery week.  This is week 3 of this cycle; so, Friday is a break through run: 50 minutes with four six-minute intervals in zones 4 and 5; Saturday is 1 hour swim, 3 hour bike in zones 2-3; and finishing up the week with 10-mile run in zone 2.

What would you do?

what would i do?  listen to my body.  i've had to alter plans on nearly all of my major training programs (1/2 marathon, full marathon, 70.3 and century rides) due to fatigue, over-training, or injury.  it sounds like you did that by taking it easy today (from the daily workout thread).  i still went nutso when i had to alter my plans, but all the races ended up ok.

one suggestion/area to look at would be your recovery nutrition, that has bitten me several times.  i could often string together a couple of days of solid workouts, but eventually it will catch up to me if i don't keep my glycogen level up day-to-day.  i still struggle with that weekly as i tend to desire intense multi-hour workouts 5 days a week, but just can't do it realistically due to fatigue/over-training.
Where are we going??  And why am I in this handbasket??

right now.  somewhere.  somebody is working harder than you.

I had this decision to make last week. I was exhausted so I took the entire weekend off. It kind of messed up my plans because I was 3 weeks from my next big race, not 2 weeks, but I knew I needed the rest.

This week I'm doing medium workouts and next week I'll start my official taper. I have to say, my workouts this week have been STRONG so I think taking the weekend off was a good idea.

Say it ain't so...   Not sure how the weather up there in NY is, but the humidity is just taking away all my stamina.  If I were you I would take a couple of days off, or do a real light workout, and then see if you can pick it up again.  Frustrating, but sometimes I guess we need the body a break.

I think I'm going to skip the 10-mile run Sunday.  Monday is a traditional rest day, so that would give me two days of back to back rest. I wouldn''t want anyone to have to come claim the body.

I got in an extra hour of sleep last night and focused on hydrating well through the day, so today's run was a success.  I don't want to miss out on the bike Saturday because we're riding the actual 70.3 course.

Rob's right about the heat and humidity.  It's been oppressive in the northeast.  I'm sure I've been short changing myself on fluids.

I'd always feel this way before my peak. When was your last REST day? Also-how is your B vitamin levels looking? Iron?

Sherry, my B vitamin levels have always been good.  I take a B12 and a B complex.  I always struggle to keep my iron up.  I take 106 mg ferrous fumarate daily.

My last rest day was Monday.  Here's what the rest of this week looked like.
Tuesday: 18-miles on the bike, 10 miles in zones 4-5 (time trial)
Wednesday:  brick 600 meter swim, 10 mile bike, 2 mile run in zone 2
Thursday : recovery ride: 19 miles, mostly in zone 1
Today:  4.5 mile run include four six-minute intervals in zone 4; 1.2 mile swim

So, what tactic did you take when you hit this pre-peak fatigue?

I would either take a complete rest day or lower intensity of my workouts. With that said I didn't ever skip my long bike or long runs (IW-weekend workouts)
