Running Question

I've been doing cardio such as the eliptical, recumbent bike, walking, pluse strength training for awhile.  I want to start training to run, but don't know how to start.  I lost a dear friend to ovarian cancer, and in September there is a 5k in support of ovarian cancer.  I want to do this in memory of my friend, but I don't know if it is a possibility to get my self to that point or not.  I can also walk it if need be, but would really like to try running.  Any suggestions?

Thanks, Sandi

Here is the quick answer. Yes. Do a search for c25k. That is couch to 5K and it will gradually take you from running short distances to running longer and longer while using walk breaks.

Hi Sandi,

I just recently finished the couch to 5 K program (www.c25k.com) and LOVED it! I've never been a runner before in my life...I am now running between 3-4 miles about 5 times a week. If you search for it online (Bing or Google) you can find podcasts or whatever to download on your Zune/iPod/MP3 player that have cues as to when to walk/run.

Basically, it's a running program that starts you out in intervals of walking/running and the running intervals get longer as the weeks go on.

LMK if you have questions and I'll see if I can answer. I'm not a seasoned runner...but I had luck with this program!

Good luck with running for a great cause!

I am also a couch to 5K graduate.  Can't recommend it enough!  You can repeat weeks as needed, but it's a 8 or 9 week plan to get you to 5K.

Word of caution - you may become a long distance runner upon completing this program.

Hi guys, I'm new to this board and wanted to join you all

I too have just completed a programme, not c25k, but very similar called quick start to running. Loved it, and the way you progress is amazing, who would've thought your fitness can increase so dramatically to quickly - I'm hooked

I'm another "graduate" of the couch to 5k program - I started running last June or July with it and have been recommending it ever since!!

And Sue isn't joking about getting hooked...next thing you know you'll be signing yourself up for 4 milers, 10k's and Half's...welcome to the club!!
