Protein shakes with carbs (not sugar) are an easy way to get extra cals.

You are not going to need anything extra for a sprint triathlon.

I don't recommend that you increase or mess with your calorie intake while you are still losing weight.  Unless of course you have hit your goal weight.

You may see a slowdown in weight loss initially when you increase your workout.  Also you will probably experience an increase in hunger.

Keep yourself hydrated, look for electrolyte replacement, calories are secondary at sprint distances.

When I switched to longer events, they dietician had me eat something before and after my workouts to help fuel them.  Generally the same healthy choices you make now, but with the addition of those 2 meals(they were really snacks but thats a bad word ;-) )

As for new foods or the addition of Gels or sports fuels, or anything new, I recommend trying it at home or where you are in a controlled environment.  I know you had a VSG so you probably don't have dumping, I know my wife doesn't, but there are still foods that don't agree with her.  If you find it works for you at home then take it out and try it during your workout.

Good luck.

When is your first race?

Thanks Scott. I am going to join my local triatholon club....i believe that there is a pretty good local sprint held in May of every year here. Im just going to get out there and start moving.....its an old dream of mine to do a tri so thought i would persue it  SInce my VSG i have really not done much of anything except walk the dog...last month I conciously increased my intake of vitamins, protein and the like....my appetite is poor so i have to work at it. That is why the worry about getting enough calories. I downloaded a program from my local triatholon club that tells how to start from ground zero with a goal of 20 minutes a day. Also suggested is joining a master's swim club.  Thank you for the detailed response...I really appreciate it.

Hi Tony--
If you're really starting at ground zero (like I definately did), you may want to check out the couch to 5 K program (www.c25k.com). I just recently finished it and LOVED it.

It basically takes someone who doesn't run at all through an interval training program that combines walking/running. The running intervals get longer each week as you progress through. I finished about 3 weeks ago and have been running between 3-4 miles about 5 times a week since then. I used to have problems running the mile for the physical fitness test in high school, so this is totally something new for me!

Good luck!

I agree with Scott about not increasing calories when first starting to workout.

When I first started training for triathlons, I think I was eating 700 calories a day. It was fine. I had plenty of energy and wasn't bonking during my workouts.

I was working towards a sprint tri and working out 5 days a week for maybe 5 hours a week and still had 50 lb. to lose. Over time, as I started working out more and training for longer distances, I did increase my protein and that had the impact of increasing my calories -- a little. I got up to 900 calories a day and 100 g of protein while doing Sprint and Olympic distances and having about 30 lb. to lose.

When I started training for the Half-ironman, I went up to 120 g. of protein and 1200 calories but I was also within 10 lb. of my goal weight.
