One week from my first half, nervous, any last words of advice?

 Hi All,

Next Sunday is my first half marathon, first race ever, walking.  I did 4 miles in an hour and 8 minutes today.  My coach has us tapering down.  My husband (50, 6'1" and all 169 pounds of him, been that weight since we met in college, don't you hate him?), is running it.  It will be his first race too.  5 months ago, I could barely walk the 3.1 mile initial walk, 7 months ago, before my RNY, I couldn't even walk a mile, last week I walked 12 miles (he ran the 12 miles).  I'm eating a banana before the race and just carrying water with NUUN in it, then will eat afterwards.  I tried eating during the 10 mile walk and it felt like a lump in my pouch.

Any last words of advice?  I'm a bit nervous about the actual event.
Thanks.

Relax!  Hydrate your butt off this week, and get ready for a great walk.  SAVOR the accomplishment of training and finishing!

Treat yourself to some extra complex carbs this week!

What sort of complex carbs?  I eat a lot of fruit, does that count?  Or do you mean whole wheat breads and such?

Thanks Sue.

i treated myself to some whole grains, even some less complex carbs like pizza.  YUM

I'm not sure if fruit is the same, I'd guess no, in terms of energy storage.  Definitely don't do anything like that the day OF the walk - rocks in your belly stink!

just trust in your training and ENJOY YOURSELF!  the event is the cherry on top of training, the sense of accomplishment is incredible.
Where are we going??  And why am I in this handbasket??

right now.  somewhere.  somebody is working harder than you.

Couldn't agree with Bill more. Just trust in what you have done and make sure you hydrate this week and protein for two days then carbs for 3 days out of race day. Trust your training and plan for a few mental battles during the day.

Sometimes we forget that the mental battles can be far more difficult than the physical. With your hubby there, you both should enjoy the day and accomplishment. 1/2 Mary is nothing to scoff at so give yourself a pat on the back and don't worry about what the watch says. Finish line is really all that matters.

Can't wait to read your race report.

Try to stay positive and not be nervous.  I am sure you'll do great!  Not sure of your strategy planned, but I try to start slow and finish hard, though it never quite works out that way ;)

Strategy?  Uh, I plan to get up (g-d awfully early because we have group pictures at 4:45am and the bus at 5:00am).  Walkers get to start at 6:30am, everyone else at 7:00am.  I plan to eat a banana before walking, then just walking as fast as I can.  There is one big hill in the beginning called the gut buster, then the rest is pretty flat or rolling hills.  I haven't thought much of a strategy except to keep going.  How do you come up with one?

Thanks.
