triangle tri (spint) race results - first podium!

i traveled on friday to my sisters house in chapel hill NC to compete with her and my cousin in their first tri's.  the tri was in the raleigh area and the event was really run well.  the swim was in a pretty warm lake (90 degrees on race day) and was 750 meters, the bike was a bit long for a sprint @ 17.5 miles and the run was a 5K on gravel/dirt roads and trails.  It was pretty muggy and hot even for a 7:30 start but not too bad.  this was the first time i saw the clydedales all start together in a swim wave, typically we've been scattered among the age groups, but it was cool.  There were 21 of us in the clydes division.  Swim went well/according to plan, i was looking for a 15 min swim and came in just under.  After a pretty long and winding transition from the water to the transition area, it was a fast (for me) transition to the bike, i'm finally starting to get better at transitions.  The bike course was great, mostly flat with some rollers and maybe 2 smallish to medium hills.  I was able to keep it in the big ring the whole time and drop down into the aeros.  my pace for the bike ended up being between 21 and 22 MPH, i was happy with it.  The T2 was pretty fast (again, for me), and off to the run.  The run was tough, mostly because the sun had come out of the clouds and we were starting to bake.  my split had my run with a personal best 23:18, but to be honest, the course might have been a bit short because i didn't feel that great on the run and my garmin had my pace somewhere in the 7:50 per mile range.  i saw a clydesdale pass me with about a mile to go, i though about breaking myself to pass him, but figured there is no way that could be the leader and i let him go.  turns out he was the leader and beat me by 18 seconds!  dang.  if i had known that, i may have pushed the limit, but i'm not sure it would have been worth it.  so i finished 2nd in the clydes division, my first hardware baby!  so now i'm pretty sore and tired, but heading home with the family to GA.  Now it's time to get ready for the big Ride in Indiana next week!

Awesome man. Kind of disappointing to know that you could have had him. I know you could have. IT's funny how far I will travel to run a race with a clyde division. Congrats!!!

Bill,

Your report reminded me of my last Sprint on St Paddy's Day.... This dude and I were playing cat & mouse the whole friggin race. I had some issues in T2 and he was ahead of me by 1 1/2 minutes on the run... I vowed to myself I would catch him, but, I was NOT gaining on him at all. He was 6'6" and his smallest stride was as big as my biggest. It was an out n back and after I saw him hit the turn around I could sense he was tiring... I turned it on and when we were about 400 meters from the finish I knew I had him. I passed him in sight of the finish line and WON! This close to RAIN doesn't make sense to go over the edge to win this one, but any other day, I KNOW you would own that dude. GREAT race bro...
