Sore butt from road bike,do I need a new seat or is this supposed to happen?

When I started riding my mountain bike it hurt until I got a big paded seat for it. I road my road bike for the first time and now it hurts to sit anywhere. Is this natural? Will it get better over time or do I need to go back to the bike shop and invest in a new seat?

It gets better, but you need to get some cycling shorts and some body glide!

you get used to it.  i just did a century ride in compression/jogging shorts, but my butt has been broken in, so to speak.  bike shorts with decent padding will definitely help.
Where are we going??  And why am I in this handbasket??

right now.  somewhere.  somebody is working harder than you.

You can take other measures to make the "seat" more comfortable while you ride.  My brother does many long charity rides.  Two years ago at age 56, he rode his bicycle from San Fran to New Hampshire.  He got a wider & more comfortable seat.  He got a ribbing at the beginning of the ride, but many of the other riders wished they had it within a couple hundred miles of the start of the ride.

Also, there are several brands of Butt Butter which is a salve.  I'm fairly sure that you apply it after the day's ride.  Any good bicycle shop shoud have both items or be able to special order them for you.

Thanks guys, I bought bike shorts and body glide when I spent the small fortune getting the bike, clipless pedals, and tri shoes. I wore the bike shorts but didn't apply any body glide, I will try that next ride.

Put some glide on the chamoise or pad, then put a little on your "Junk".... a world of difference.. I like using A European style chamois cream on my junk, and body glide on my pad ... it works great !!! Saddle soreness sux, but it gets better....

I changed the seat on mine - looks like a tractor seat, but it's comfortable!!

It's going to hurt for a while until you get used to it.

Check out...http://www.teamestrogen.com/product/apparel/c0-c1.html  They have some really cute and comfy riding/tri wears.

Even at my current size I've been able to get some nice things and some padded shorts, can't wait until I can get some more.  They have great clearance and sale prices but usually more in the "normal" sizes....
