Hi everyone, just thought I would check out this forum as I've been doing weight and flexibility training now for a little over a year and just added or started the C25K program to add running to my PT.

I've been very pleased with the weight & flexibility training; I've been doing 60-90 minute sessions, three times a week with a personal trainer and it's been great. I haven't had any injuries and only a few really sore muscle days and my strength and stamina have increased dramatically, the flexibility some, but not so much; I've always been very stiff. LOL!

I have a question I hope someone here can shed some light on. I have a sore right knee and it hurts not when I put weight on it, but when I pick up that leg while walking. It hurts on the inside side of my knee; if I put the palm of my hand on my knee cap, my thumb automatically ends up right where the pain is located and the pain covers most of that side of my knee. If you look at this image of the human knee, it appears to be where that tendon holds the knee joint together on the side:

I googled Joggers Knee and Runners Knee and read up on that, but what I have really doesn't seem to fit with those descriptions of the pain or the causes. According to the articles I read; "Runners Knee" is caused by weak quads and tight hamstrings ~ OK the tight hamstrings fit, but the weak quads do not; my quads are very strong; I know this from my weight training.

So here's what happened:

When I started the C25K program it seemed too easy, so I stepped up to the week 2 times of running for 90 seconds and walking 2 minutes and that seems about right; at 90 seconds I'm starting to get winded and after 2 minutes of walking, I'm recovered and ready to go again. All seemed well and in fact the third time I ran, for the first time I can ever remember, I had a couple of brief moments when my breathing and stride seemed to come together and the running was effortless for a few seconds. I can't ever remember feeling that before and it was pretty kewl. But later during that same run / walk, I did feel my right knee stiffen up a bit; there was no pain, it just felt stiff. The knee didn't start to hurt until later that day and then the next two days, yesterday being day 2 after. I didn't run today and I'm not planning to tomorrow, but I would like to on Thursday, but I'm a little worried about making the knee worse.

Anyway, sorry for the ramble and I really would appreciate any help here as I don't have a clue what to do about it.

Thanks again,

Kerry

Sounds like your knee is a bit pissed from some overuse. You could try some ice massage after your run. That helps speed recovery and reduces inflamation. There are a lot of obscure exercises that help stabelize the knee even if you think that your quads are strong. I would think that a search for knee rehab would give you some ideas.

Kerry how funny
I'm adding C25K to my strength training and yoga too... I just came here to see what's up....

does the knee CLICK when you move it?

I have a torn meniscus in the left knee and arthritis in the right knee....  (and a really good relationship with my ortho doc obviously)....

might want to find a good sports ortho doc and see what  he says...

The yoga is pure torture for me; I've always been real stiff everywhere so trying to do those yoga poses is the hardest thing I do; much more difficult than any of the weight training.

No, the knee doesn't click, it's just sore on the side where my MCL is. I don't know why it's sore, nothing happened I know of that would cause an injury. I don't think it's related to my mensicus, but who knows?

I"m very stiff... it's a congential issue so I work very very hard to keep up with the yoga so I am not so stiff....  there are adaptations that can be done that will work with what you have and improve it over weeks and months... when I started in November I could NOT bed at a 45 degree angle even.  NOW I can bend in half... but it came centimeters at a time...

I don't mess with knee pain.  I'm on a first name basis with my ortho!

Yup, I'm the same way Nessa, I am real stiff, but much better now than I was a year ago when I first started to train. For example when I started they had me sit on the floor with my legs straight out in front of me, then they measured how close to my toes I could get and now I can get 6" closer than when I started. So it is working, it's just that I've been this way for a very long time; I'm 58 and it's going to take a lot of working on it to improve my flexibility.

The knee pain is a new thing for me, I've never had this before and I've been very active for the past year working out with weights, playing tennis etc. I'm determined to get to the bottom of the problem and fix it.

I've said it before but I'm so impressed with the work you do.  Hope we can learn from each other here!  Right now, I'm TOTALLY in your wake, though!
