Finished My First 13.1 Sunday!
Sunday, June 6th had just about every condition I hoped not to have for race day - the course was really difficult with lots of hills. Add to that blazing sun, high humidity and temps near 90 (way above the average). It was miserable and I wasn't sure I would make it, but just kept putting one foot in front of the other. I am slow to start with, but with the awful conditions I ended up walking most of the course from about mile 8. I had to keep reminding myself that my goal was just to finish. I did finish! And I was not last - close but not last :) Not too bad for a formerly obese chick who is well into her 'F' years attempting her first 1/2 marathon.
My time was so lousy. I figure I have no place to go but up should I attempt this again.
Just wanted to say 'thank you' for the helpful advice found on this forum. You all are an inspiration!

Congrats Sharon! It does sound miserable, BUT YOU DIDN'T GIVE UP! You pushed through to the finish, which is a huge accomplishment. I am very impressed!
Every morning in Africa , a gazelle wakes up.
It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed.

It knows that it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve.
It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle
when the sun comes up you'd better be running.

Mazel Tov Sharon! You did it! And I wouldn't worry about the time. I'm training for my first half, and I'm walking, am definitely not ready to run yet and I hope to make it in 4 hours. So I'm sure with running 8 miles, you did much better. Be proud of yourself!

Awesome job Sharon!! And think of it this way....you'll be able to *smash* your time the next time you do one and have an even better PR!! Congrats!!! I've got my first one coming up on Sunday and I'm just wanting to finish on my own and not be hauled over the finish line! Nice job, keep us posted with your next race!!
