I am new on this board, but not new to exercise.
Here is my frustration.  It seems that whenever I start my exercise routine and I am at it for about a week, I gain weight!  Why?
My weight gain is about 1-2 pounds more I am newly out of surgery and have been exercising and my weight always fluctuates higher after the fact that I started exercising.
Can someone out there give me some good advice?

I am really getting frustrated with this and really it discourages me

Here is my BEST advice...

Throw your scale in the trash and keep excercising! 2 pounds??? Big deal... I can retain 4-5 pounds of water from day-to-day. There are no studies that show lack of excercise is a GOOD & HEALTHY thing. However, EVERY doctor on the face of the earth will tell you to excercise because it is ESSENTIAL to good health. Good health is not always defined in pounds...

When you exercise, you break down your muscles and use up glycogen. This releases water. To repair them and put the glycogen back requires putting the water back. So you often don't see any movement (or even a gain) on the scale when you first start exercising due to water retention.

The only thing you have to watch out for is that you haven't increased your eating i response to your exercise. If you haven't, then the weight loss will show up on the scale eventually.

The other 2 replies are correct and I would like to repeat what Dan said about the scale - Throw it away! I bet you will find that even if the scale goes up a little or doesn't move at all that your clothes will fit a lot bigger. Judge by how you feel and how your clothes fit.

hard to do given the way we're pre-conditioned, but listen to Dan.  I'm swinging plus or minus 5-6 pounds right now at 215, close to 3% of my weight a day - when I was 360, this would have equated to swings of 10 pounds a day, or more!  The body does different things when we start working out, and I don't fully understand it.. best bet is to just stop relying on the scale.

The guys have it right.  I step on my scale on Monday mornings.  if i step on it at another time - it goes up.  Even during my fast loss time right after surgery, it would always read higher if it wasn't Monday morning.  So, once a week is my deal.

Exercise will never make you REALLY gain weight - it may help you gain muscle, which is smaller than fat, (so your clothes will get big on you) but it might spike your weight a bit, but you'll lose fat, and the pounds will drop again.  It's a roller coaster, but worth the ride.  don't let the scale stop your healthy habits!

I completely agree. The scale is not going to tell you anything about your fitness level, nor does it really tell you anything about the weight gain. Sounds silly right? But you truly dont know where the 1-2lbs are coming from. But past experience with the scale tells you "somethings wrong!!". The 1-2lbs likely has to do with the muscle recovery process.  Often times muscle breakdown will trigger an inflammatory response (which is good!) to heal and repair the muscle so it can become stronger (Its a temporary gain). So my advice is keep exercising and go by how you feel. Listen to your own body and internal cues. And by increasing your self awareness will prevent the machine from dicating how you are going to feel the rest of the day. Good Luck!

Thanks to everyone for their input, it is highly appreciated.  I am going to continue exercising and I know the weight will come off.  You all gave me hope and motivation to continue.
