Meeting with Trainer

Well met with a trainer today for the free consultation.  Since I want to wait until I am cleared by my doctor to do weights we stayed away from machines.  I have been doing straight cardio the past week, well and one water aerobics.

Of course he tried to sell us the Body Bugg, not really wanting to spend that kind of money right now, but he was trying to tell us how many calories to eat and such.  Mind you my boyfriend has not had nor is having right now surgery, but he is losing weight.  Essentially he told us carbs and protein to match and the rest is fat intake (in percentages at least), which mine will be low anyways.  At least he said carbs per low glycemic index, and doing those before a work-out even if just cardio for me as it will help with my endurance.

I guess that is what got me.  I haven't been doing over 30 minutes, so now time to kick it up to 45.  And to increase protein a bit to about 100 grams, so I can get more use out of my work-out.  so I am hoping all of that helps me to really get this train moving.  That and he did give me a target heart rate, which was about what I figured, but I have a touch of play room with it.

Good luck! I've been waiting for the personal trainer to call all week to set up an appointment for my first free consult. I'm about ready to ask for another trainer. Left a few messages but haven't heard back from him. It's frustrating because I am so ready to start weight training.
I would follow your docs nutritional guidelines over the trainers. Unless he is really familiar with surgery, you need to make sure you are getting your needs. Sounds like you are doing great, but I just wanted to make sure you're careful.
Good luck.

Well he told my bf that he should be eating 2100 calories and consuming 200 grams of protein, I was like what.  So we listened and took what we needed and ignoring the rest.  He even the mock draw up he did had me at 1500 calories and I was like umm nope.  He tried to tell us for every pound of lean muscle, we need to drink that in 1 gram of protein.  Umm yeah maybe for body building, but not weight loss.  So I will try to go with the 100 grams, because I have read that is a pretty good norm to help really boost, but no more and my bf is not going to do 200 grams.

Shawn-I'm guessing you are talking to trainers at 24 hour fitness? (The body bug gave it away). Personally, I haven't had good experience with the trainers there. I had neck surgery 7 years ago, and they had me doing completely inappropriate exercises for the hardware in my neck. Many of them (at least in my own experience) have general experience, but not specifics.
Maybe try talking with the trainer manager. Generally, they can set you up with a trainer who may have your specific needs more in mind. Personally, I do 45 minutes of weights each day, followed by 35-45 minutes of cardio. I have three scoops of protein powder each day (Nectar sweets-sugar free, and 23 grams of protein). I eat tiny meals based in protein, then veggies. I have a little fruit for snacks, as well as almonds. I'm 10 months out, down 100 pounds, and I think this is the healthiest I've ever been in my life. Weights CAN be fun-and you certainly don't need all those calories each day. Keep up the water intake, and you will definitely see the difference!!!!
(Incidentally-I didn't do the body bug, although a co-worker did. I'm doing just fine without it, and without the monthly monitoring fee).
