I just had surgery 2 months ago and started going to the gym this week.  I wake up in the morning, hit the elliptical for for 35 minutes and then head home to get ready for work.  I have a protein shake just after my work out.  By the time i get to work i am exhausted and dragging all day long.  What am i doing wrong?

On another note, I know that i need to start doing some strength training so i don't get too flabby.  I am clueless when it comes to what to do.  Does anyone have any advice for me on this?

RNY on 02/16/05 with
the protein shake after the workout is good to help restore the muscle, however, your body needs fuel to work..are you getting up first thing and exercising on an empty stomach?  you should have a snack consisting of protein and good carbs for energy, then wait atleast 1/2 hour before exercising.

this will give your body the energy it needs to work

good luck  :)

RNY 2 months ago and tired after working out. You are doing nothing wrong. You are at such a calorie deficit as of now that there is nothing that will help very much with that. Take it slow and do what you can. Other rny ers will tell you the same. Your body wants thousands of cals a day and you are giving it 300-400 at the max and working out.

You need some carbs after your workout. Perhaps some 100% apple juice, or banana with peanut butter

Yep-need some good carbs.  I eat a couple low fat Ritz smeared with peanut butter-does the trick.  As far as weight training for a beginner a good place to start is Power 90 by beachbody.com.  There are two choices included in the workouts-resistance bands and weights.  Easy to follow and Tony Horton makes it easy to learn.  This is a good precursor to the P90X-I just started those workouts 3 weeks ago and they are kicking my butt!  I applaud you for exercising!  So many people leave this out of the change to their life and it is vital for success.

In your situation, you should consult a doctor and ask for some help. A professional one would surely give you the best way how to have the exercise that is suited for you.
