Reinjuring Quad muscle/What should I do?
Hi all,
As I have lost weight, I've started to do things like play on a softball team. Unfortunately, I keep reinjuring my quad muscle in my left leg from doing something as simple as sprinting around the bases. It seems all my walking, swimming and the eliptical machine have not prepared my quad muscles for sprinting short distances. The first time I hurt myself, I didn't warm up properly, but I have after that. I did give myself what I thought was enough time to heal, but last Saturday I got a base hit and thought I was shot in my upper thigh as I ran to first base. SIGH!
What did all of you do to get yourself up to par? I might start with a doctor's appointment for physical therapy, but any other ideas? I really want to play softball without causing injury.
Thanks!

It sound slike you are on to a good start.
Dr. P.T. and proper warm up & stretching. You could also try taping the area for some additional support.
You might try doing some running work in an environment where you can control the speeds like on a treadmill.
Just do short little bursts, interval training to build up the speed and strength needed for those sprints down the baseline.
Good luck I hope you find some relief from the pain and injuries.

The first time you do something - It's going to be a personal record!
Definitely sounds like you need some PT!
My physical therapist evaluated my gait and figured out that I need an insert in my left shoe when I run. Otherwise, I'm putting extra strain on my left calf and it makes it hard to heal up my calf injury. He also gave me advice on my swim kick and my bike pedaling that also helped. He also figured out my gluts are weak so now I have exercises for that.
This is not stuff you can figure out on your own that easily. It needs a neutral and trained 3rd party observer.

Yea, the PT is definately in order...and then perhaps they can give you stuff to do at the gym (do you go to a gym or do your exercising at home etc) with weights and what not to strengthen not only your quad, but your other muscles to help support your quad etc.
Good luck

Hi all,
Thanks for the advice and information. I am going to call my Primary Care Doc and hopefully she'll be willing to send me to PT. I do go to the gym and swim, walk quickly on a treadmill and use an eliptical machine so I was surprised when a quick run to first base could create an injury. I've been going to the gym for over a year too before playing softball.
We shall see what the PT has in store for me.
Thanks again!
