Increasing mileage & sore feet?!?
So when you guys start upping your mileage did your feet hurt? I haven't had problems on shorter runs - 4-5 miles, but anything more than that and my feet hurt. Not horrible, but after my run yesterday (8.6 miles) my feet hurt today. I had to stop a few times to loosen my shoes because they were hurting the tops of my feet - this has been happening over my last few runs. I got new shoes (asic kayanos) last week and I've been using some full footbed length soft spenco inserts that I used in my old running shoes.
I felt a little stiff this morning when I got up to go to the gym, but that went away...unfortunately, my feet are still sore. Is this a normal part of increasing your mileage and my body will get used to it or am I a complete idiot and just don't know how to tie my shoes properly?!

1. I use KT tape anytime I am not running. One strip on the ball of my foot, up my heel around my tendon and a second piece starting angled on the left side just below my pinky toe and across my arch and up around the ankle. It forces your foot to constantly stay arched.
2. I iced the crap out of my foot day and night and then did the golf ball rolling and loved hearing the crunching and grinding sounds that come from breaking up fluid and tissue.
3. I repeaded # 2 a lot.
4. I stretched my foot more than any other part of my body before and after my runs. I never got out of bed without stretching first.
5. I repeated # 2. If you don't realize by now, # 2 is super important. LOL.
6. Get another pair of shoes. Don't let your foot get used to the strengths / weaknesses of a particular shoe. Not a good idea for your foot and you will hate it when that shoe goes out of production. So get a second pair of shoes and rotate them each run.
Hopefully this helps and good luck. I have come to the conclusion that running is just really painful.

I switch between two different pairs of running shoes - my feet aren't really playing favorites...they've been hurting with both the old & new ones..awesome!!
Seriously, if it wasn't the shin splints on one leg or the other then it's something else!! Not that it's really going to make me give up running because I've already decided that's a keeper...the pain (and it's not really all that bad, more annoying than anything) will just make me tougher right?!? I just keep hoping that I'll have a race where something doesn't hurt BEFORE the race!!

I am kind of new to running longer distances, but have you had your feet evaluated to be sure you are buying the right shoes? I am attempting a 1/2 marathon with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. During our kickoff, the coaches stressed that we go to a running store that had the proper equipment to help us find the proper shoe. We have a local running store that did a computer analysis of my foot, including my arch and whether I pronate, suppinate, am neutral, etc. They also did video taping of my feet running on a treadmill. There is no extra charge for this service. What I found was that I was buying the wrong kind of shoes for me. The new shoes helped a lot until I started getting up to 10 miles. Then I started having major knee pain. I went back and had them recheck and found that the insoles were not sufficient. We fitted me with some different insoles and I have now made it 12 miles without knee or foot pain.
Just a suggestion.
Another question - could the pain be due to your feet swelling?
