What do you fuel up with before a workout?

Im just curious what do you eat before a workout. I've had people tell me protein is the best, just drink a protein shake right before work out. Then others say carbs, eat a banana or pretzels. I tried several different combinations and I am a little dizzy/weak when I get off the treadmill after a 3 mile walk. Just looking for some info!
Thanks

After 3 miles of walking, if you are working up a sweat, be more worried about dehydration versus fueling. Beforehand, what has worked for me, has been a protein bar or some peanut butter toast about an hour before workout.

When I run, however, I ususally run on half a protein bar if I'm doing less than an hour run. Otherwise I will add toast. Bannana or PBJ afterwards works well too.

Varies from person to person, so you may have to experiment a bit.

Hugs,
Kathy

It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle
when the sun comes up you'd better be running.

I eat a cup of Carbmaster yogurt with some granola about an hour before working out.

Before a really hard/long workout, I usually do a protein shake with a frozen banana instead of  ice.

My stomach gets upset if I drink a protein shake before a workout, or if I eat anything within an hour of a workout. What works best for me is drinking some water before I get on the treadmill and then keep a bottle of iced gatorade with me. Dehydration is usually what will make you feel dizzy. Just be careful not too drink too much while you are on the treadmill because it will give you cramps.

I eat so many things. Your pre-workout nutrition should be carb-based because you are going to burn glycogen during your workout and you need quick energy. But it's okay to have some protein in there too as you need it post-workout and for super-long workouts so having it before means it's there available when you need it.

I tend to go for veggies or fruit beforehand, but sometimes I'll have cheese sticks, part of a protein shake (but made with a banana to up the carbs), or a gel. If I'd eaten recently and am not hungry, I will not have anything pre-workout.

Thanks for the info! I am trying to get in at least 64 oz of fluids most days since I had an incident at the gym a couple of weeks ago where I nearly passed out. A personal trainer told me I was probably dehydrated. I was only drinking about 48 oz a day at the time. I will figure out what works for me, hopefully soon!
