The Flying (swimming) Pig
So I guess we had three of OH'ers down there running this past weekend! Rob and I sent a couple text messages before the start but alas our meeting wasn't to be -- sorry bro.
This was my fiancee's first 1/2 marathon and she's been dealing with some overtraining issues. Our last long run together was 13.1 miles BUT it was about 4 weeks ago. She was successful in getting in a 9 mile run a week ago but she was still nervous. We got to the expo and this being her 1st she had to get a couple other shirts to remember the race;) It was funny, she got a hat that said 13.1 mile finisher and she looked at me and said "well I've got to finish to be able to wear this hat now." I just smiled and thought -- you understand now don't you.
It was supposed to rain all weekend and we got our hopes up with a dry Saturday but upon waking up Sunday we realized we were going to be soaked! By the time we got to the start line I was drenched. We paced ourselves with the 2:30 half-marathon pace group and started out really strong. The rain let up unfortunately around mile 3 and the heat/humidity got both of us. At that point we realized between the hills and the overheating we'd have to walk earlier than we'd plan and that any thought of a 2:45 goal was probably gone. We ended up walking mile 9 and just really enjoying each others company. Mile 10 to the finish line were very strong for us and we made a point to thank the crowds that were out there, the volunteers and police/fireman at the intersections along. We finished strong and our chip time was 3:01:39, Garmin time was 2:58 since we both had to stop for bathroom breaks.
The greatest part of the race for me, holding my fiancee's hand as we crossed the finish line. She's got some underlying health issues that makes doing marathons and other events harder than the rest of us so I knew what she was pushing through for this event. With good weather and a flatter course I'm sure we would've been right around 2:45. Towards the end we talked about the Detroit marathon and I think she may be up for trying it. I'm still hoping and feeling that I've got a 4:30 marathon in me (I've had 2 half-marathons @ 2:16/2:17) but will put that on the back burner to get her to the finish line. Crossing this finish line with her was probably sweeter than any finish line I've done solo.
On a good note, I'm feeling like a 3:00 half/6:00 full is very attainable for the ironman -- that's my goal at least!
Nutrition wise, while the hyperglycemia continues to kick my butt I feel like I got things going pretty solid out there. I brought the glucose tablets and took them a couple of times. Finally feeling like I'm wrapping myself around those issues and getting things under control.

Hey Dan, it's great to hear from you.
Congrats to you and your fiancee. I would love to do an event like that with my wife, but I have a hard enough time getting her to walk around the neighborhood with me.
I bet it was special to finish the event together.
Good luck with the rest of the year and any future races you have planned.

The first time you do something - It's going to be a personal record!
that is awesome that you were able to run and finish with your fiance.... it had to have been a great moment for you. from your and the other 2 race reports, this one sounded pretty rough!
good to hear from you, i know you've been busy with plans ( wedding i think?)...

Congratulations Dan (and fiance') ! !
I have to admit, I teared up reading your post! So glad this experience was a positive one for both of you, albeit painful and wet, I'm sure! Now I'm getting super motivated to get me one of those hats!!!

Every morning in Africa , a gazelle wakes up.
It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed.

It knows that it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve.
It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle
when the sun comes up you'd better be running.

Dan, good job! Congrats. to you and your fiancee. I really like running with my wife. We're doing the One America Mini Marathon in Indy this weekend. I wanted to do the Flying Pig but didn't get registered in time. I did think about you guys though. My 100k bike ride (Coach Hep Cancer Challenge) was cancelled due to storms on Saturday. Keep training hard. You're doing great!
