ramping back up... advice?

After my 10 miler I had to rest - doctor's orders.  IT Band flare up.  I did nothing for a week, then I started doing some real walking - a few miles at a time, and began my physical therapy.  Now I've got a week of PT under my belt and tried running for the first time on Saturday.  I ran a mile and my knee felt ok, but man was I winded!  Maybe if I'd kept going I'd have found my rhythm, but I cut back and walked another 2.5 miles.

Will I bounce back quickly?  I don't want to reinjure, but I want to get my mileage up and moving again.  I will check with my PT today for advice, but I'm wondering what others have experienced?

Thanks,
Sue

I just wrote an article about how to go back to the basics of fitness when you've had an injury or when you are just starting out. It talks about baby steps to take. I have a degree in Exercise, so I hope this helps. Here's the link! Blessings!

I would be more concerned about the knee than the cardio. That will come back quickly if you only missed a week. I missed three weeks last summer and was back to normal within a few weeks. If your knee is good than do one week of pretty easy work and the following week, pick up where you were. Just my opinion.

I'm struggling similarly.  My knee (IT Band) is pretty bad since just before my half marathon about a month ago - I haven't really rested enough since, running in a 15k and a couple of 8-9 mile training runs.  Got sick last week with bronchitis and that forced me to stop running for a week.  Yesterday did a 5 miler or so and the pain came right back.  I'm just paranoid about slowing down the training for too long, especially since I've grown accustomed to eating a bit more based on burning up those calories.  I'm trying a new insole (Spenco greens, at Dan's recommendation) to see if it helps the band issues.

OMG - tell me about the damn EATING.  3 weeks of sitting on my butt and/or walking a few miles/day has made me afraid of the scale since I'm used to consuming and burning many more calories!

Hope you've got some stretches and strengthening work on the legs to help the IT Band.  I can really feel the difference in my hips now!
