Question about exertion
Hi everyone,
As I already posted, I did my first couch to 5k walk/run tonight. I was surprised at how my body reacted... I didn't break a sweat. I'm wondering if I didn't work hard enough. I was definitely warm, but it wasn't my muscles that hurt. I was more out of breath than tired. Should I up my speed to get a better workout ?

My thoughts: I'd follow the game plan, and allow your body time to adjust to the new routine. Being out of breath means you need to focus on your breathing more. While walking, work on taking deep breaths, down in your gut. As you start to increase intensity, you will find your heart rate will go up, and you will be working your muscles quite a bit more! Take it easy to prevent injuries.

Take care!

Every morning in Africa , a gazelle wakes up.
It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed.
Every morning inAfrica , a lion wakes up.
It knows that it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve.
It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle
when the sun comes up you'd better be running.

The first couple weeks are meant to be easy, they ease you into the program and give you several chances to reward yourself with success.
These early successes keep people coming back to the program.
If they set it up so hard that you were miserable or couldn't do the workout, you would be more likely to give up and quit.
If after a few weeks you are still finding it too easy, then increase your speeds on your walk and your run. But give it a try for a couple weeks.. Don't adjust your workout based on one session. Unless that session was too hard for you to do.
