First 5k this Saturday...

Okay I have my first ever 5k on Saturday. I have no chance of being competitive at all, that was not my goal to begin with, that will come later. I'm simply doing it to say I've done it, to get a feel for a racing environment because I love running even if I do suck (lol), and because a year ago not only would have I not wanted to do it, but I would have been unable to do it.

I plan on there being plenty of walking involved, not to mention my idea of running is more like jogging (4.5mph), but nonetheless I AM  doing it. I'm thinking 5min warm up walk, 15min run, 5min walk and so on until I complete the dang thing (there are people signed up to simply walk). Does this sound like a reasonable plan of action? Any other suggestions are more than appreciated!

Also, should I just take Friday off from running/the elliptical or should I take tomorrow off too?

You can laugh at my ignorance, just help me while you do! lol

you are going to do great!  Just finish, you'll totally be pumped when you cross the finish line, I promise.

You  might want to take a couple of days off, maybe just a light workout tomorrow (walking or the elliptical really lightly).  Definitely take Friday off and just stretch really good.

Thanks so much for the encouragement! I'll be sure to make a post after wards, even if it is more of a time that looks better for a 10k. haha

Today when my husband called, I told him I didn't plan on doing that great. And he reminded me that good and great are only relative to what I choose to define them with. I told him my goal was just to finish. "He said then if you do that you'll have done great!"

I ran in my first 5k last month and it was awsome. I was in no way having a shot at winning anything. I just want to not be dead last.  There is an  atmosphere on race day that seems to make a person wanna run faster . Let us know how you do.

i travelled to run my first 10 mile a few weeks ago.  My mom dropped me off at the airport, and on the way she asked "does someone win?".  I told her yes.  She asked if I was going to win (she really has no idea what these races are like!).  I told her that I win if met my goals which were to 1. keep moving and 2. finish strong.  After I crossed the finish line, I called her to let her know I won!!!  I believe I placed around 10,000th.

You really only need to take Friday off.   Enjoy the run and don't worry about the time.  Your success is in starting and finishing the event.

My first was last Saturday. Just finish strong and use your time as what you want to beat in your next one.

The only requirement for a first race is a few tears at the finish line.
