question about running and eating
Ok, this is not about me, but my son...He is 14 and is running track right now and I have noticed that he is ravenous, more so than a normal 14 year old boy. We are of course a much healthy household, so what are some good healthy foods that I can feed him. I send protein bars with him to school...but just this morning (without me knowing) he woke up at 5 am and had a peanut butter sandwich, went back to sleep and then woke up at 6:30 and had 2 english muffins...packed his lunch..took 100 calorie doritos, 2 roasted chicken legs and wings, a yogurt and a protein bar, who knows about dinner...
I want him to be a healthy runner, I know what to do for me, but what do you do for a healthy 14 year old boy..oh he is losing a little weight and does not need to...
Thanks,
Erin

growing teenage boys is not my field of expertise (ok, i have no nutrition field of expertise), but I'd say that letting him eat a lot of calories worth of healthy foods is fine. maybe throw some fruits into his lunch bag too. He can handle and will use up the carbs from stuff like that peanut butter sandwich and the english muffins.
Maybe him having a later evening snack like a peanut butter sandwhich on whole wheat will keep him from needing the 5am one (don't want him to lose sleep!).

i too know nothing about nutrition for growing boys/people. when i am in need for info, i seek out expert advice as well as peer advice. if i were in your shoes and this was concerning me, i would seek out a sports nutritionist with experience with teenagers. (much like i found a sports nutritionist with bariatric experience to discuss my needs a while back) best of luck!
Where are we going?? And why am I in this handbasket??
right now. somewhere. somebody is working harder than you.

I have a 16 year old and him and his friends can eat us out of house and home in one day!! I kid you not!! He had two friends come over a couple of weekends ago (he's only here part-time) and they ate two pizza's (think family size pizza's) and then some! Teenage boys seem to really need the fuel, and when you add in running to the mix, the amount of food you've described isn't bad. Think growth spurts and running. He's probably not getting enough. There are some websites that can tell you what his resting calorie counts should be and then add up what he uses in running and you can start figuring out what he needs on a daily basis. I have lose it on my ipod touch that works in keeping track of calories in and calories used. You might try tracking him a couple of days on something like daily plate and get a starting point.

Can't wait for it to get warm enough to start going to the fresh markets and buying the really good stuff...Leaving soon...He is running his track meet soon...he is running to races...He is running relays...one is a short sprint and the other is a lap around...He won last week...:)
