I'm a newbie

Hi everyone,

I had RNY 3 weeks ago and I'm looking at getting started on a running program.  My long-term goal is to run 10km.  Obviously I'm quite a ways from that, but I was able to run about 3km before surgery.

I guess I'd like to hear suggestions from people who started running after surgery.  How should I start ?  Is it too soon ?  Any ideas about how to train ?

Any insight would be great.

Thanks

Welcome to the Exercise & Fitness Boards!  Once your surgeon gives you the OK to start running, considering using the couch to 5K program. www.c25k.com/ which combines walking with increasing intervals of running to safely build your endurance and mileage.  Many of the runners on the board started with this or a similar program.

You'll find a lot of inspiration and advice here.  Join us on the daily workout threads for some added accountability and fitness ideas.

Good luck on your journey.

Welcome, and ditto to the above!

I started on the couch to 5K at 9 months post-op, and I just completed my first 10 mile race at less than 18 months post-op!  You are way ahead of me for even thinking about running, so good for you!!!

I recommend taking your time with the couch to 5K - repeating weeks if necessary.  Just don't skip weeks, as it's important to increase your mileage slowly!

I'm currently doing the C25K and I'd recommand it to ANYONE that is wanting to get into jogging/running. It's a super good way to get back into shape, and in my case to start from having NEVER ran or jogged before!

As stated before, contact your surgeon/doctor to see when you can start a jogging program. My surgeon had a six week hold on any strenious activity other then walking. Though I did start the jogging program at four weeks and my surgeon was all for it when I went in to see him at my month check up. hehe

Just ask your surgeon and use your best judgement sweety. I would encourage you to stress REALLY good and protect your knees.

Thanks everyone for the great welcome and suggestions !  I'm seeing the surgeon next week, so I'll see if she gives me the ok to start running.  The couch to 5K sounds like a great way to get started.  I think I'll try that.  I'll keep you posted on my progress (when I start, etc).  In the meantime, I'll just keep reading your posts and learning.
