Lacking motivation and focus
So my focus had been steadily declining through the winter, and I had been hoping that with races coming up I would see some spark. I had the first half of my year all mapped out and planned.
I was set to do a sprint tri on April 17th, an Olympic on May 2nd, a century ride on May 8, and a 70.3 on July 18th.
I have been reading that a lot of people get the winter blahs when it comes to training and that the race season is like a pick me up.
Well since breaking the collarbone, I missed the sprint, I'm going to miss the Olympic, and the doc said I could ride the century, but I shouldn't try to race it, it should just be a ride and let the pain dictate how far I go.
I haven't done a damn thing since I broke my collarbone. It is like it sucked the life out of me. I have absolutley not motivation at all. I still can't run, because the bouncing hurts. The recumbant bike or even the stationary bike in the gym sucks as it doesn't feel like the road does. I can't swim, because I can't raise the shoulder past a certain point without pain. Every day I don't workout it gets easier and easier to do nothing.
I made the mistake of looking at the times for the finishers at the sprint triathlon this weekend. My time from last year would have gotten me 2nd place this year. And hell I'm faster now. I'm running about 2mins faster per mile and I know I'm able to keep the bike speed up as well. Barring any unforseen issues like breaking my collarbone, my training had been going well and I would have probably picked up some podium bling at this race. So that's not helping me much on the attitude meter.
Bassically I'm just irritated and whining, but I am looking for some input.
Any suggestions on what to do to regain that focus? Do you experience off season blahs when it comes to working out, and if so what is your cure for them?

The first time you do something - It's going to be a personal record!
Well, I don't live close enough to slap you upside the head...so I'll just have to give you moral support and let you know I feel for ya. I know once we get out of any good habit, it's hard to get back into it again. I've been there...though not to your extreme, I've never broken anything. I'd say ride the exercise bike anyway. No, it's not like the road, but it's a heckuva lot better than doing nothing. You know how good you feel when you're exercising regularly, let that be your motivation. Hang in there!!

It happens bro... Don't beat yourself up about it! Start reading some books gaining more knowledge, and get a plan in place for the time when you are able to train after recovery. Stay positive and realize this is just a tiny bump in the road...

Just wanted to tell you what an inspiration you have been to me!
I can only offer the advice of doing what you can and stay as active as you can while healing. It's much better in the long term to heal up properly then to push to hard and do long term, possibly severe damage to your body.
If you can ride your bike, map out some more of that lovely country side you showed us a week or so ago. It was soo beautiful! I wish I was closer to have you be my mentor on biking and hopefully help take your mind off your current injury/ies.
Maybe start a daily thread on here about biking do's and don'ts. I know I for one would really appreciate it. Maybe discuss the best bikes for certain rides. The best way to start, length, calorie intake. That sort of thing.
Keep your head up and know that you have really inspired people to be more active and to be more then they were before.
*big hugs*
Best wishes and healing prayers to you!

Scott,
I echo what Suzi said. You, and others, have inspired me, and made me feel accomplished, capable, and reminded me that I am human. So, you have to hang your cape up for a brief time span to heal and regain your super powers.... It will come.
So, take another day or so (set a time limit) to wallow... feel like crap... emotionally beat yourself up for being breakable and, well, human. THEN at the end of that time frame, STOP. Remind yourself that you gave yourself limited permission to beat yourself up, and then move on.
Take care!!!
p.s. If you really need someone to slap ya upside the head, I have a friend, who has a friend, who has a cousin....

Every morning in Africa , a gazelle wakes up.
It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed.

It knows that it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve.
It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle
when the sun comes up you'd better be running.

After my half marathon at the beginning of November - I stopped running. I still exercised, but not as much and definitely not running! I was burned out.
So about a month ago, my buddy says lets jog to the sign. And now she has the running bug so I'm doing the c25k program again with her. This time around though - I'm doing all the running outside vs on the treadmill like last year. She has longer legs - so she is making me work to run faster than I normally would.
I feel for you - I wouldn't want to be sidelined but if you can ride the exercise bike inside, do that, even though it's not the same because at least you will keep up the conditioning you have built up. Would the elliptical or arc trainer be an option for you as an alternative?

Scott,
Just want to say you are an inspiration to me and have given me some very helpful advice in the past. I look forward to reading your posts. You have come so far and have a lot to be thankful for. Things will get better. Time has a way of making that happen. Your times have improved so much and that's a huge sign of progress. Be proud of yourself and do what the doc's say. It will get better my friend.
