Well. I have committed to my FIRST EVER marathon/race/walk/ thingy! hehe

It's 5k on April 28th. I'm excited, nervous and scared all at once! hehe

I'm going to actually be walking it. I feel too self concious being so fat to jog it and be huffing and puffing with all these people in the army that run five miles a day!! lol

BUT! I WILL be there and I will finish. So..yeah me! lol

Just wanted to gather any advice from you 'thoners' that have been there, done that. hehe Should I eat more, do anything special? I do my C25K for the 25 minutes and I can jog a minute ten with only a tad bit of heavy breathing. So I have improved! hehe

So bring on the advice for a total newb in her first 5K!

Thank you all for being the wonderful, supportive, and inspiring folks that I love to read about and learn from!
*hugs*

The first one is so exciting - trust me you  have nothing to worry about, there will be lots of folks huffing and puffing, probably even a few army folks.  Just think, you will, without a doubt set a personal record on the 28th!

Hey there Suzi! Congrats on committing to your first 5K!!! You must be so excited. I just ran my first 8K on April 11, last sunday and it was wonderful!  I was able to push myself more than I have during my workouts before the race and it's only been 2 months.  You will be excited and have a bunch of adrenaline just being around a ton of motivating people.  Since you are walking the 3.1 miles, I don't think that you should do anything different than what you have been doing before your regular workout routine.  Make sure you are hydrated and have breakfast the usual time before you workout.  You will do just fine.  I wish you will have a change of heart about jogging at least some of the course; you should be confident in yourself and your improvements and don't worry about what others think. They will b too busy on the course anyways  lol.  I really hope that you find the courage to do your jogging/walking increments that you have been training for in the Couch to 5k instead of just walking the whole thing.  Good luck!!!!

Congrats Suzi,
Let me tell you,I was in the Army for 5 years, there are A LOT of out of shape people in the Army. Unit don't run long distances that often. Don't worry about being self concious, you'll do great.

WTG Suzi!  I did my first 5K on 10-31-09. I did run, jog, crawl, cry.  Lots of hills. I did it in just under 48 minutes. It gets addicting! I was going just for the cute shirts...LOL...but now I try to better my time each race.

You will do great. Regarding nutrition, I think it varies for everyone.  FOR ME, I make sure I hydrate good the day and night before. The morning of the race (usually around 9), I drink 8 oz. water, and have my breakfast/brunch ready to consume AFTER my run.  So basically, I was running my 5K empty.

However, my last 5K, I did eat peanut butter toast about an hour before the race, and my tummy did okay. (I get runners trots...so was a bit hesitant to run with food on board).

You will find what works for you. JUST ENJOY THIS ONE...YOU WILL REMEMBER IT FOREVER. TAKE PICS!!!!

GREAT LUCK TO YOU AND BIG HUGS!
Kathy

It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle
when the sun comes up you'd better be running.

Thank you all! I might jog a bit and alternate with walking. I'm not sure. hehe I'm still undecided as to what to do. I'm hoping that people from my WLS group will join me and we can walk/jog together.

The event starts at 1pm in the afternoon after the health fair that will be taking place.

I will eat breakfast, not sure if I'll eat lunch. I think I'll just take an energy bar with me to munch on while looking at the differnt stands and exhibits.

Thank you all again soo much!! I will totally take photos!! hehe Can't promise how good they will be. lol But I'll take them!

*big hugs* Thanks again for all your insight and answering my questions.
