Goal set for Aids bike ride

I have been triying to get my partner to start riding bicycles with me, and so far he has not stuck to it. He is HIV+. Yesterday at an aids walk, which i walked 3 miles in, we found out about the Lonestar Adis ride. He is interested in doing that ride. The ride is in Sept so we have time to prepare. You can ride anywhere from 10 miles to 180 miles over 2 days, so it is very doable.

I am so glad to see him interested in this. I love biking, and wanted this to be  something we enjoy together. This morning he rode his bike before I woke up. That shows me he is serious about this. Also part of his modivation is that he lost alot of friends to Aids back when i****ing the gay community so hard. He is one of the lucky ones. He has been pos since 87, and is still doing very well.

you are lucky to have someone to do this with you - I am jealous - my wife will come out to the races, and she does fetch ice after I am done, but still can't get her out there running with me.

Doing it for a cause also really helps motivate.  I did my half with the World Vision team raising money for clean water in Africa, and it really was a win-win all around!

Best of luck!

Keeping it fun will also help with the motivation.  Take a bike ride and have lunch or something like that.  Our local cycling club does lots of club rides that revolve around a coffee shop or specialty food location as the 1/2 way point.  I know food isn't what we want to hear or think about, but you really can discover some nice places.  And if you are riding for 180 mile you are going to have to learn to take in food while you exercise.

I take my 7 y/o on 10 mile bike rides and we stop for a cup of hot cocoa for him at the half way point.  Or some other treat when he finishes the ride.  It helps give him somthing to focus on besides the "are we done yet"  Not that your partner will need that kind of motivation, but it does take the work/exercise aspect of riding and make it secondary to having a nice day together.  Load up a backpac with a healthy lunch or snack, ride x-miles to a park or bike trail, have lunch and ride back.

Good luck with the event, it's a great thing to be able to get some exercise and to help out with a worthy cause.

that is a great goal

I used to work at the AIDS committee of toronto and our AIDS ride always brought in lots of fundraising. Getting healthy and for a good cause. I can think of nothing better.

Here's a website for a big ride in CA for June.  The site gives lots of great tips and information re: bike riding.

 aidslifecycle.org.

Chad Allen, openly gay actor, is involved with this organization.  He's on there as Chad Lazari (sp?), I think.  That's his birth name.

Anyway - some information here and motivation for you and your partner.

My goal is to do a 5k benefiting an AIDS orgnaization here - Friends for Life.  So go luck to you and good health to both.
