Hi All,

I had the VSG on 3/1/10. I have been walking on my treadmill since 1.5 weeks out. I am having a hard time losing weight.  I walk (briskly) for 40-55mins a day, 7 days a week.  I have some weights..but an having a hard time getting motivated to use them. My DH is bringing home  a stationary bike. I am kinda excited. My question is this.. will I be working out different muscles..than I do on the treadmill..is this considered cardio,?? Do you think that might jump start my weightloss again??  I am a exercise ding-a-ling...lol   Thank you for all your advice.

Jess,

Cardio is anything that gets your heart rate up into a target zone. You can google target heart rate and target training zones for information, but basic formula is:

220 - your age = your maximum heart rate (mhr)

MHR * 60 % = target heart rate for fat burning
MHR * 70 - 85% = target heart rate for good cardio workout

So, whether you are walking briskly, biking, running, swimming...it's about getting the heart rate up initially.  After you get a handle on that, you can try other activities and start setting some good personal goals!  Make sure you get your doc's A-OK before starting a strenuous workout regime!
Build muscle with the weights, as muscle burns more than fat does!

PS:  it is good to cross train - mix it up - weights, bike, run/walk, eliptical, treadmill, swim, etc.  That way you keep your muscles guessing, and don't get burned out/bored with your routine!

Good Luck!

Kathy
Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up.
It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed.

It knows that it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve.
It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle
when the sun comes up you'd better be running.

Thank you Kathy!
I will look more into it. I am thinking about joining curves..just to make sure I workout all of the muscles. I am hoping that with enough exercize, I won't need plastic. thanks again.  -Jess
