Fuel for distance running
Hi there!
I'm a new member on here but a long time distance runner. I've completed 1/2 marathons, full marathons and triathlons. When I first met with my doctor my first question was "How long after surgery will I be able to start running again?".
My second question was "what can I take when I'm training/participating in a distance race?". I currently use GU products to keep me going but I understand that the sugar/caffeine combination will not go down well post surgery (I'm having VSG).
Can anyone make any recommendations on portable (my marathon time is currently 5-6 hours so I need to take stuff with me) and effective training supplements?
Any other advice on running post op will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jo

Everyone is different post-op, and alot of this will be trial and error... I love GU Roctane Gels, Cliff Bars, Sports Beans, and pretty much whatever I can stuff in my face when in a longer distance race. Congrats on the surgery, welcome, and I look forward to watching your progress...

Welcome and congrats on the upcoming surgery.
Start off walking right away, Jogging a couple weeks after the surgery, any weight lifting or core exercise probably 6 weeks. Those were the guidelines I was given by my surgeon.
As for food, you may not have a problem with those foods. The only issue will be quantity right away as your food quantity and desire to eat should be reduced.
My wife had vsg and there isn't anything she can't eat. I had RnY and I can like Dan posted above, eat most of those things, but there is a limit where I go beyond and then it can be a problem.
It's a matter of trial and error. What I do with the gels, is a get a gel flask and I buy the gel in bulk. I put a couple squirts of the gel in the flask and then mix it with water or sports drink. This helps me with it going down. Some of the gels I just don't like the consistancy/flavor of them. I have had a couple of them sit heavy, specifically the coffee or chocolate flavored ones. Mixing them has helped that.
Be safe, try it at home, so if you do have any issues, you are in a safe comfortable environment. Then move it outside and onto your runs/rides.
You can also check out things like NuuN which is an electrolyte tab that you disolve in water, they are mildly flavored and will take care of your electrolyte needs without all the sugar.
Or you can try something like Infinit where you can customize your drink mix protein/sugars etc. and they will mix it up for you. I like the infinit because you get your fluid, electrolytes and your energy from one source. You can customize the level of flavor as well. I think I was off a bit on my initial flavor intensity so I just add a package of crystal light to my infinit and make it whatever flavor I want.
Good luck.
Scott
