Each bike serves it's purpose.
The one I have got me started, but it just isn't good enough when I'm riding over 100 miles at a time.
That bike got me started, and if I was just going to go out for a casual ride with my wife and son, it would probably be good enough forever.  But when it comes to endurance riding or racing, it doesn't cut the mustard.

With the bikes, just like with cars or anything, you really do get what you pay for.  I bought a cheap bike, and I have had parts break already and had to have them replaced.  If I had spent that money in the first place on better quality stuff, I wouldn't have had that inconvenience.
Yeah I can drive to the city in a yugo, or I could be driving a luxury or a sports car.  It really does make a difference in the driving experience.

I'm in the category of going out for a bike ride for 45 minutes or so for exercise...I'm not as "hard core" as you guys. Maybe someday when I'm not running my business 12 hours a day, trying to keep my kids in college and then get completely out of debt, I'll have a bit more time to devote to long-distance riding, etc., but that ain't gonna happen for a while.

Good luck in your quest for the "perfect bike!"

Crap! I'm impressed w/anyone that starts out on any bike! You can do a tri on that, just switch our your fat tires to non-knobby ones!

Dude-some good advice going on.

I was going to mention about finding some sponsors-but it looks like Dan is working on the hookup.

I'd like some race wheels-but even at the discounts I have I can't afford them.

Hey, My Wal-mart Mt. bike gets plenty of use! I just know I'll need to get a GOOD bike before I start competing. I hope to get my Bike this year and be prepared for a few century rides in 2011. For now, at least I'm biking!! Which in the long run, is more than I was doing last year!!

Amen! I figure it's good enough for what I need it for. If and when I ever get into some serious biking or competition, I realize I'll have to upgrade.

Once you start riding anything that lasts for more than a couple hours and includes some real hills, you probably want to start considering or at least looking at what kinds of bikes are out there.

Sure you can do it on any kind of bike.  One of our local club members did out 60 mile rid on a mtn bike, but he is a monster and just brute force alone is able to keep up.  While another one of my friends insisted on getting a Hybrid bike.  I told him he would suffer on those bike rides and he would get left behind.  He wouldn't listen.  Sure enough the last ride we did, he got dropped by everyone including the Grandmas and Grandpas.  He was absolutley the last person done and he was just destroyed.  His bike probably weighs a minimum of 10 pounds more than everyone elses, and with those bigger tires, he just has to work harder to get speed.  Then you add some hill climbing into that equation and he had several hours of suffering all by himself, instead of being able to have a nice social ride and enjoy the countryside.

Most of the people I have talked with recommend a good set of race wheels as the best improvement you can make to your bike.  The aero factor and the ability to overcome the road resistance is supposed to be a big deal
