Virtually any weight loss methods can lead to weight loss, but only if it leads to a decrease in caloric intake or increasing the calories burned.
Reliable and safe weight loss method should meet the following requirements:
1. The diet should be safe, it must contain all of the recommended daily allowance of vitamins, minerals and protein. It should only reduce the caloric content, providing all essential nutritional factors.
2. The weight loss method should lead to a slow but steady weight loss. Expect the loss of 500 grams a week after the first two weeks. Most low-calorie diets cause rapid weight loss due to rapid loss of fluid. When returning to a normal diet, weight loss due to fluid quickly recovered. Thus the expected weight loss should be reasonable.
3. If you plan to lose more than 7-10 kg., have any disease or constantly take medication, you should be screened by a dietitian prior to weight loss. The doctor can assess your state of health, which may affect diet and weight loss. The same doctor will be able to give advice on the need to reduce weight, the weight loss program suitable for you. If you plan to use a diet with very low calorie (800 kcal), you should always be observed by a doctor.
Your method should include a plan to keep the weight after weight loss phase. No benefit to lose a large amount of weight and type it again. Hold the weight - this is the most difficult part in the process of weight controls and is not often found in fast weight loss programs. One of the most important factor in weight retention - increasing daily physical activity.
Weight control should be carried out on the continuation of life.

If you're interested in dissuading any on this board against surgery, you're too late. I for one refuse to feel guilty about having had surgery and am quite proud of the way I live my life today. Besides, this board contains some of the most active people you've ever met who have maintained their weight loss through observing their diet and making sure they get exercise.
Another point is, most of the research done recently shows that the faster the initial weight loss (without any intervention surgical or pharmacological) the more likely that the weight will stay off. People need to see progress and quicker weight loss is a great motivator. If you're interested in these studies, I'd be happy to get my friend (who just did a research paper on the subject) get me his resources and I'd love to send them along.
You can preach your ideas. It's certainly your right. But it might be good to do some actual research (using primary literature from PubMed) and use references as you'd have to in school. Any old Joe can spout any jargon they like (and it's all over the internet). I just don't choose to acknowledge it's value without peer-reviewed literature behind it (I'm a scientist, by training - MS biochemistry - and currently enrolled in pharmacy school).
You gotta keep up with the literature and adjust your ideas to what is found to be true. Weight loss surgeries are found to work better than most other methods for long-term weight loss success. There are lots of retrospective studies out there that show this to be the case.
Scientists don't just publish what they expect to find or want to see. They don't waste their time going to message boards and preaching their ideas. They publish. They even publish the unexpected and unintended results because that's just the right thing to do. Then they adjust the hypothesis accordingly and test it again to see if they get the same answer.
You probably didn't read this entire post, but I sure hope you do and next time actually do more than a Google search on weight loss and choose hits that validate your opinion. It's really good to keep an open mind and be able to see other perspectives.

Before I make my point, I would like to discuss the topic of having a point with which to speak about. The point to be made is not so much about the thoughts that you might have towards a particular subject that may have something to do with the point you are trying to make, but moreso, thus, having a point is more about thinking thoughts that might make you think about thoughts of having a point to be made.
In other words, when we think about what was once thought of by a specified thinker who initiated a thought to come to you about a point you may or may not want to make, we should reflect upon the reasons why thoughts come to us when we were'nt really trying to think. Finally when we endeavor to speak on a topic with which we thought of, we sometimes realize our thoughts leave us thinking that we really have thought a little about a lot of things, but not a lot about a little bit of things. In closing, we think what we thought, therefore, when we say what we thought, it truly reveals that we have deviated from that which made any sense at all....
Does that make sense?
***** Note to self... i really wish I could have taken this person's advice prior to losing 200 pounds, and running Ironman... I think it really would have helped me lose a lot slower.
