I meant to add that the long run is a separate animal altogether.  But... without good base miles, it's tough to progress the long runs.  Really just a different vocabulary getting to the same place.  I didn't/ wouldn't say that doing 25 miles a week is enough training for a marathon - it's the starting point for a good training plan.
