Newbie wants to say hi

Hello fellow exercise maniacs!  I have been checking this site out for awhile and thought I would say hello!

I did a half marathon (13.1 miles) on 3/26 and completed the race in 2 hours and 33 minutes! I ran the whole thing!   The course was at the Lost Pines Resort in Bastrop, TX (outside of Austin) and it was all hills.  It made me feel better when I ran into a ultramarathoner after the race and he said that was the hardest course he had ever run.

I did 99% of my training on the treadmill because I was having knee pain and didn't want to injure myself and not be able to run at all.  On the treadmill, I did 11 miles in two hours and 7 minutes.  Not too far off from my all hills half marathon!  I'm working running faster so I can shave about 30 minutes off my run time.  Saturday I ran ten miles in an hour and 44 minutes!  I'm moving in the right direction.

My goal is to do another half in a shorter time and I would also like to do a full marathon (26.2 miles) soon!  This next sunday I have an indoor triathlon that I'm training for.  We shall see how this one goes......

As for my weight....I have been having to eat more carbs to fuel my workouts.  Apples, brown rice, bananas, dates, etc...I couldn't function my massive calorie deficit with the high protein, non-existent carb diet I was on.   My goal weight was 140 which I reached in Feb (super goal is 135), and as of this morning, I'm 145.  However, my measurements haven't changed (except in my upper arms.  Some how I gained and inch!?)

Oddly enough, I have noticed more loose skin now than ever.  Maybe I really have lost more inches but my skin is taking up more space?  I have probably two inches of loose skin on my upper arms, a few inches on my thighs and my lower abdomen.  Everywhere else seems to be holding up.  I think I've been focusing so much on running that my weight lifting fell by the wayside.  I'm hoping if I get back into my weight routine it will help a bit with the skin issue.

Anybody else notice this?  The loose skin got worse after a year out?

Congrats! and WELCOME!

i have noticed a HUGE difference in my skin!!!

I have been training for a 10 Mile that I will race this coming Sunday. In that time i have gained about 7 lbs, but have not noticed clothing getting tighter. I have also seen more skin flopping around - rolls of it on my front side. I think I've tightened up and muscled up underneath, and burned most of the fat, so the skin is just really empty now.

I'm hoping that I will eventually go through what I've heard others say - at about two years there is some fat redistribution. some people actually get a bit of their butt back, their face fills out a little after being gaunt for a while.

That's good to know!  I find it interesting that as my training time increased, so did my weight (give or take a few pounds).  Is this normal when you run longer distances?

P.S.   Does this mean I'll get my double chin back!?!?  Awe man....:)

muscle weighs more than fat, so as you build muscle, it's not suprising to see the scale stall out or go up a little.  it's not necessarily a bad thing (so I'm told - but I find it hard to wrap my head around!).

I think your double chin is safely in the past!

First of all... WELCOME!!! Congrats on finishing your first Half, that's great!!! Once skin has all the fat gone that lives under it, it can do nothing but look worse, unless you haveincredibly elastic skin, which most of us do not, thus the need for Plastic Surgery. I almost ran the Hell's Hills 50 mile Ultra this past weekend down in Smithville, but with Easter and a huge egg hunt for the kiddos planned for Saturday, I had to pass. Again, welcome and I hope you feel at home here, there are tremndous folks around here!

Thanks Dan!  You are really an inspiration!  I would love to start getting into triathlons soon.  I'm doing an indoor triathlon this weekend but it's just not the same.  I thought it would be a good way to get my feet wet though.

50 miles?  Wow.  How does one even go about training an ultra marathon?

Welcome to the board, and congrats on that first 1/2 marathon.  That is excellent!

I hadn't noticed an increase in the loose skin, but I generally try to control mine with a compression shirt like under armor.  Walmart and Target both have their own versions and they work just as well and cost significantly less.

Don't give up on the weights, I found that I focused on cardio, and as a result lost a lot of strength and muscle.  It has been an uphill struggle to get that strength back.  It would have been much easier to try and maintain it than to build it back up.

Again, welcome and don't be a stranger.  Keep us updated on how your training is going.

THanks so much Scott!  I definately will do my best to be a regular around here.  Are you training for anything right now?
