Low Iron and Fitness

Just got my labs back and my iron is pretty much rock bottom. (not even at the low end of normal, we are talking ROCK BOTTOM!!) This may explain why I am having troubles trying to get all my fitness stuff in. I'm always feeling tired. (well at least the last three weeks or so).

Anyone know how soon after upping your Iron you feel better, and get your butt moving in the exercise department?? I'm still managing to get out and run, just not as often as I would normally. and other than working with my horse and playing on the trampoline I'm feeling pretty beat up right now.

It took me about a week for my fatigue to start improving when I was diagnosed with low iron and about 2 weeks for me to feel normal again.  To maximize absorption, I take my iron on an empty stomach with a little bit of orange juice right when I wake up.

Thanks. A week or two to recover sounds great. Thanks for the info on the juice!

I agree with Cassie.  That's about how it worked for me.  I take mine at night with grape juice, but the Vit C helps absorption (which is why you should take it with juice).

I take a ferrous gluconate rather than sulfate, but I have found that I get a better response.  It costs more though.

You might not even want to run much until your iron improves.  Each step you take breaks some red blood cells, so you lose iron from that as well as other womanly types of things.

Take care of yourself first, and worry about the running when you feel more up to it.  You're really not helping yourself if you don't.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll stop running at least for a week or two while I build my iron back up. I'll hate it but I can do it. It's even harder right now as we are having BEAUTIFUL weather and I want to get out and run!

I could not get my levels up with oral iron. I tried for three years. I just finished two rounds of IV iron and feel better. I go in for repeat labs in 2 weeks to see if I am done. I never altered my running, but if you feel exhausted you probably aren;t doing yourself any favors by running.
I took a prescription vtamin Chromagen Forte that raised my levels somewhat. Work with your provider and keep on top of checking your levels. The VitaLady that posts on the RNY and graduates board is real helpful with iron supplement information.

Thanks for the info. I'm really trying to avoid having to do the IV iron route. I don't know if the feeling of exhaustion is from the lack of iron, or I'm trying to fight off the crud my daughter has right now (or a little of both). I'll be seeing my provider next week and will work with him to figure out what to do to get the iron situated. I'll also talk to Vitalady.

I had a low iron problem about a year ago and started taking the ferrous gluconate on Linn's recommendation and it has brought mine up to normal levels. I however can not take it on an empty stomach, when I do that I have gastrointestinal pain. I buy it at Walgreens.
