Working out, but gaining....????
Ok, so I had RNY on January 4 and have been doing really well. I started "working out" about a week after surgery, only the elliptical and swimming. About 3 weeks later I started doing light weights, I have lost about 33 pounds. I have now upped my weights, I do weights 2 times a week and swimming (about 2500 meters) 2-3 times a week. Anyway, I got on the scale and found I have gained a pound...I know this is normal, but need to know that it is normal, because I am a little freaked out, trying not to be...but ya know how it goes.
So, thanks for any advice that you can give.

Gee whiz, woman, you are doing great with the exercise! 2500 meters swimming?? And I thought I was doing so well, swimming about 650 meters in 30 minutes. You go, girl! How long does it take you to swim 2500 meters?
You know that 1 lb. is not fat gain, right? It's muscle, or water. You are doing great, and that scale will start moving downward again, I promise!

Thank you Jenny, as far as the 2500 meters I do need to break it up a bit. Right now I am swimming a mile without stopping, it does take me about 35 min, but I am getting better. I have always loved to swim, I was swimming some before the surgery, but now...it is so much better!!!
And thank you for the "not fat", I am sure you know how it is...I know I have upped my weight training and really upped my swimming, so I am sure that has a lot to do with it. I told my hubby when he gets back from his trip he needs to hide the scale and only bring it out when i threaten him bodily harm...LOL

Sure I know how it is...I've been stuck for a long time. I have about 30 lbs. to go, and they are being very stubborn! We want to see the number go down, even when we're losing inches, our clothes fit better, etc. That scale really has a hold on us.

Are you tracking your food? If you aren't, then you might be over-eating as a result of the increased exercise. It's pretty common, actually.
If you are tracking and know you are operating at a calorie deficit, then it can't be muscle (you have to operate at a calorie surplus to build muscle) -- it would have to be water. Which does happen to people, including me; when I first increase my exercise, the first week, I see nothing on the scale, but the second week I start to see a loss again.

I am tracking, I am getting about 600-800 calories a day right now, I am still at the 1-2 oz stage of my food. I have been drinking a lot more water these days. It is much easier to get it in now. I know it is only a pound, I feel like I am obsessing about this...
Thank you for all of your responses...building muscle would be great!!!

Then I wouldn't worry about it. If you weren't tracking or were eating close to your maintenance calories, that would be different.

600-800 calories really isn't enough for the amount of exercise you're doing. Believe it or not, I've seen it posted many times that if you increase your calories a bit (good stuff, like another protein shake or more lean protein during the day), you will start to lose again.
