Just keep swimming

I reached a major milestone in the pool today.  I completed 1.2 miles, the farthest that I've swum so far and the exact distance I'll need to swim for the Syracuse 70.3 in September.  It was reassuring to learn that I could go the distance and not feel exhausted at the end.

The Total Immersion philosophy has really helped me to relax in the water and swim more efficiently.  Who knew it could be so easy if I just stopped fighting the water?!

Congratulations! You should be proud of yourself!

What is the total immersion philosophy? I want to start swimming laps as I am having some back issues but have not started yet for one reason or another! I am having pretty bad back pain and spasms after running acctaully even if I do not run or Zumba. I am getting an MRI tomorrow and am afraid they will say to stop running for a bit.

Mary,

Sorry to hear about your back.  I've been putting the time in the pool because I haven't been able to run for several weeks.  It's definitely helped me maintain my fitness and keep from going stir crazy.

www.totalimmersion.net/ focuses on teaching swimmers how to reduce drag in the water, so you swim more efficiently.  I purchased the book for the drills and then watched you tube videos to help me mimic the proper techniques.

What I find amazing is how much more comfortable I feel in the water because I'm gliding in the water instead of sinking in to it.

Good luck with your MRI tomorrow.

Hi Cassie! Just curious, how long did it take for you to swim 1.2 miles? I've been lap swimming, and am up to 30 minutes non-stop. I'm not sure how far I'm going, I'll look at the length chart tomorrow morning and find out. I'm going more for the time just for fitness' sake, but I'm just curious how I compare. I know I'm a relatively slow swimmer. I'm also wondering what the Total Immersion philosphy is?

Thanks, and congratulations on your milestone!

Hi Jenny,

I saw on your other post that you found the You Tube videos.  I used the book and the videos to learn the swimming techniques.

Including the rest intervals in my drills, I swam about an hour and 15 minutes today.  I haven't been focusing on speed at all at this point.  I've just been practicing technique to make sure that I can hold good form.  When I get sloppy, my legs sink.

Have fun in the pool!

Yeah I did...I had never heard of Total Immersion before, but it really looks interesting. I watched those videos for a long time last night, and listened to that instructor (McLaughlin, I think his name is). I hope I don't drown myself this morning trying to put those techniques into practice, I'll bet it takes a little while to learn to do it well, huh? Thanks for the heads-up about it!

Very Cool Cassie!

I've been doing the distance I need for my little tri in April, and it IS reassuring to know it can be done.  My issue is the time, but I'm also at a point where I KNOW I can fini**** in the time I predicted and I'll only get better as I do it more.

Once again, Great Job!  You're doing fantastic!

nice work cassie... i've been avoiding the pool as i've been focusing on the run for my March marathon... however, i have a 1/2 IM staring down @ me in May, so i will need to get off my duff and get in the water soon.
Where are we going??  And why am I in this handbasket??

right now.  somewhere.  somebody is working harder than you.

McA-you doing Macon, Rev3 or GCT?

I started w/total immersion-it definitely helped me a lot-especially w/relaxation and balance-probably the 2 key things that will get a swimmer going.

With that said-Cassie-I suggest you ask your local tri-bies about good swim instructors. The one bad thing about TI is that one can over exaggerate their movements-like rotate too much, bring hand in too close to ear, etc. They are very easy fixes!

Best thing I learned from TI was "sweet spot" It got me through my first tri w/out drowning:D
