New to running :)

I went to the gym the other day and my favorite machine was taken...the elliptical. So I hopped on the treadmill and thought let me do a light walk and play around with the incline to maximize my workout. Well, the curiousity bug hit me and I thought why the hell not try jogging.

I hit the 4.0 mph button and started. The first minute was strange but then the next thing I knew I was jogging for 10 min without any problems. I took a walk break for 2 min and then kicked it back up to see if it was just a fluke or not...I made it another 10 min!!!

My legs protested the day after of course. But yesterday I thought let me try that again to see if I was dreaming or not...and I jogged 27 min out of 35 min total on the treadmill. Legs feel fine today and I feel wonderful!! I never thought in reality that I could actually do this...even though I always wanted to if that makes sense. I am so excited that I can actually run!!!

What advise do you all have for me on a way to start a routine for running? Do I do this every other day?? 3 days a week?? etc. What other advice do you have for this newbie?

I have been switching off and on from jogging to elliptical to stair stepper (hate that machine) to spice up the cardio.

Thanks for the advice!!!

Diana,

A lot of what you (we) do is based on the goals.  If you're really interested in running, it's VERY important to have the right shoes for YOUR feet and gait.  You can get them at a good running store, but be prepared to spend about $100.

If you're interested in doing any races, go ahead and sign up for one about 3 months from now.  That'll give you some more motivation.

I started out with a sort of couch to 5k program that starts you off running for short periods of time and increasing the jog time each week.  I started doing my jogs at 6.3 mph and walks at 4.0, but that's faster than many start with.  Pick your speeds based on your fitness level and ability.

Running has been the best thing I ever started doing.  It's fabulous exercise, great for your cardiovascular system, and a great way to keep off the weight.

Have a great time with it!
