I have used them a couple times at work when they had a walking challenge and when they did a weight loss challenge.
I didn't care for either of them. In both cases all they did was count steps and they weren't very accurate. Then you had to do some math based on some generic distance equivalent.
I think they manufacturer said 2000 steps was a mile.
The problem with that is that everyone has a different stride length, so someone really tall is getting cheated on their distance and someone with short legs is getting an inaccurate boost to their distance.
Ideally you would look for one that has a stride you can set. Or you would spend quite a bit more and get a gps enabled device that will tell you exactly how far you have gone.
I did do a quick search for some recommendations or comparisons

The
Omron Digital Pedometer-Model HJ-112

The first time you do something - It's going to be a personal record!
You could also look into a GPS watch. Those are easy to use and tell you to the 1/100 of a mile how far you have gone.
