Hills on the bike.  How do you tackle them.

I have been playing with both seated and standing, as well as a combination.
Just found this video today talking about the same thing.
Right now I think I like a combo of the two, it give me a chance to stretch out the leg muscles, but not burn them out.

My goal is to remain in the aero position as long as possible.  When I am hurting or my cadence is slipping too much I sit in the horns.  After I'm there I'm somewhat at the mercy of the hill, I stand when I need to.
As proven by Muskoka I don't have the hills around here to really train on like I wish I did.  I believe that the answer to your question lies in what you're trying to accomplish.  If you're working on building power then I would think powering up the hills, standing and going all out at a medium cadence ~60 would be the way to go.  If you're looking at avoiding threshold then focusing on trying to maintain your cadence a ~80-100 and don't worry about speed would be best.
Not sure this helps at all, but thought I'd through it out there

Thanks Dan,

Not really looking for an answer, just kind of taking a poll to see what people were doing and what works for them.  You never know you may find some tidbit of info that help.  Then again it may have the opposite effect.

I generally stay seated until I really slow down.  Then I get up on the pedals and push.  I will sit back down again if I am able to regain some of the speed without killing myself.  I like this because it uses different muscles, and you don't load up on one group of muscles this way.
It's a nice break for that muscle group.

I am kind of wondering what life is going to be like when I move from a 3 ring crank to a 2 ring compact crank.

i stay in the saddle as much as possible and only stand up when i can't make it up the hill sitting.  not sure if that is the right strategy or not however.  this weekend is my 2nd tri, and there are some serious hills on the course.  i was able to ride the course a couple of times over last weekend before i got a flat tire, and i will most likely follow a new strategy of getting out of the saddle on some of the stepper shorter hills to try and maintain a decent pace.  i think my average MPH is going to go from 21 to 22 MPH on a flat course to 17 and maybe 18 if i work hard on this one.
Where are we going??  And why am I in this handbasket??

right now.  somewhere.  somebody is working harder than you.
