Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon - Virginia Beach - Results

I did my first Half this past weekend in Virginia Beach!!   It weather was great in the low 80's and low humidity.   

I started back a few corrals with a friend that was running as well.   This caused me to be a bit slower in the beginning of the race then I wanted I suppose. (might have been a good thing)  I also took a pee break and stopped at to many water stops.   I cross the finish line with a chip time of 2:08:04.    



I am still pretty happy with my time even though I have done better in my long training runs for my full marathon in November.   I set a personal goal of 2:15 for my first half so I made it!  

I do the Philadelphia Distance Run Half in 2 weeks to I hope to PR and get in around 2:05.

Here are my splits.   I did notice I needed to step it up and was not pushing myself hard enough and did a few negative splits the last few miles.

Great job, Tom!

I really like the Rock and Roll events.  I have done the one in Phoenix the past 5 years and they've always been run well.

Your time is right about my PR time for a half.  Nice job!

I only hope I can do near your time for mine in Oct. (I'm guessing 2.5 hours is going to be more my speed though.)

Tom,

Congratulations on finishing the half marathon faster than your personal goal, even with the stops!  I'm sure the lessons learned in Virginia Beach will help you PR in Philly.  Enjoy your run!

Thanks Cassie.   Yes I plan on making some adjustments to my routine and hope to PR in Philly!  

My friend I was running with had RNY and was using Sport Beans.  She started dumping at mile 6.  I told her to get on here and talk to you and some of the other RNY folks to gain some knowledge from your experience.   I know you have issues with the beans as well.

Tom,

I use the Sports Beans, but I eat no more than 3 at a time every other mile for a marathon.  Any more than that and I dump.  Sometimes, I have to skimp on the beans, if my stomach is more sensitive that day.

Great job Tom. My first big race and 1/2 will also be a Rock and Roll event in San Antonio. I am excited about the venue and I hope all of the excitement with the bands will help me stay on pace for a 2:17 goal. I want to run my 1st one at an avg 10:30 pace. Was there a lot of chaos at the start with all the runners or did everything go pretty smoothly?

My friend Jane from San Antonio flew to Virginia Beach to do this half with me.  She is also doing the RNR San Antonio Half in November      She has been training with the USA Fit SAT group.

I started in her corral further back ... #26 I think.  I was supposed to be in 16 based on my time.  This did cause me to fight my way out of the pack for the first mile or so.  Other than that the start area is very organized because of the phased starts.
