Hello everyone!

I need help! I cant seem to find a steady exercise routine. When I do exercise, I try to go a mile on the treadmill in under 20min and a mile and a half in 30min. I also use the ab lounger and do 100 crunches. I do that 2times a week...most of the time. But by the 3rd day my legs are screaming!

Whats the best time of day to work out? Should one eat before or after exercise?

When I get to school next monday I want to start getting into a real routine seeing how the gym is free. I just need to know what I should be doing.

In the beginning I had to have a rest day in between every exercise day. If you are doing 100 crunches every day, you should definitely take a day off here and there so your muscles have time to recover.

The best time of day to work out is when you'll do it.

You should not exercise on fumes, so be sure you've eaten something recently. (It can be as long as 2 hours before you exercise though. Eating *immediately* before exercise generally gives people problems as your ability to digest while exercising is limited.

My surgeon recommends everyone do a minimum of 4 days a week for 45 min, 2 days of cardio and two days of resistance/strength.

Hi Rachel!

There are lots of things you can do, but I agree that the best time of day is whenever you'll do it.

If you're new to exercise, walking is the best thing to start out with.  The NIH says that you should do cardio exercise 5 dyas a week, but if you need to work up to it, that's much better than hurting yourself.

A BIG question is, how soon after exercising do you eat?  It's really important to eat something high carb with 30-60 minutes after you exercise.  That's called recovery eating and I just learned about it last year.  I eat something like a Cliff Bar or a peanut butter and jelly sandwich right after exercising and don't have any trouble with subsequent workouts like I used to.  I was surprised at how much difference it made.

It's also important to do some strength training a couple times a week.

I don't know what all you have access to, but it's nice to have a variety.  I use the treadmills at my gym as well as do spin classes and use the weight machines when I can make myself.  Mine also has pool that I use when I can.

Most of all, it's just important to find things that you like that will keep you going.  I like to think of exercise as the main ingredient for health, so I do things and have goals that keep me engaged in the activities I do.  I'm also in school so it's easier for me to get my workouts in the morning, but we all find the best time for us.

Good luck in your endeavors.
