Really weak in the gym
Hey everybody. I had RNY on 3/30/09. I worked out fairly regularly up until that point and although I wasn't a beast in the gym, I was pretty strong. I was expecting some strength loss due to malnutrition, but as I have gotten back into the gym pretty steady again, I have been shocked to find how weak I am! For example...I was dumbell pressing 90's, now I can barely get 10 reps with 45's. I was squatting 405, now I'm struggling to hammer out 10 with 135. I know I have to work hard to get back to it, but any reccomendations on supplementation or training regimes?
I have the same issues, and I haven't found a solution to the issue yet.
My raw strength has not come back. I wish I had focused more on keeping the muscle mass and resistance training. Instead I was focuse mostly on weight loss and aerobic exercise.
It is certainly harder to get the muscle back than it would have been to keep it.
My only recommendation that I have found from my reading is to make sure you get a carb and a protein within the first 30 minutes of your workout completion to help rebuild the muscle tissue and restore your glycogen stores.
Good luck, and if you find the solution, please share it.
Thanks

The first time you do something - It's going to be a personal record!
I am closing in on 4 years out and I am not as strong as I was in college but I would say that if I dedicated myself, I could be. You have to give it some time to get back. Your body hates you right now for screwing it all up. It was so happy being fat. Once you settle in, you will be able to gain back some muscle and get back to where you were.

you're going to have to ride it out... rapid weight loss will cause your body to eat up your current muscle. I found that just getting in the gym and working out (and living with NOT improving the weight you can lift) for 9 months was just as important as sticking to your nutrition plan. I'm just now at 10 months out able to see some production again in the strenght category. BUT, if I didn't spend the frustrating hours in the gym starting @ 7 weeks out, I would be in a pretty bad spot from a baseline muscle perspective.
Where are we going?? And why am I in this handbasket??
right now. somewhere. somebody is working harder than you.

I feel your pain brothers. My strength and muscle mass really tanked. I've been hitting the weights harder for the past couple of weeks and I think that it's helped a little. I've had to swallow my pride and go back to low weights with high reps. I've also upped the protein. I'm back to doing the shakes again. Everyone says that the strength will come back.....I think that the jury is still out on that one. Still I'd rather be a less strong healthy man than a strong morbidly obese man.
