Trail Running can be INCREDIBLE

So Monday I got to see my grandparents -- what's something is they haven't seen me since before my WLS 2 years ago!!!!!  It was great to see them and they live in Northern Michigan which can be pretty remote and just very beautiful.  So I got up at 7 and head out for a 7-8 mile run on the back roads.  I knew it was going to be a spiritual event when I turned out of their subdivision to the main road and saw that it was foggy and visibility was around 1/2 - 3/4 miles.  Before I turned onto the back roads I passed a field that had probably 10-15 white tailed deer, knew it was gonna be a great run.
So I'm heading down the first of my dirt roads and crest a hill to see the top of the next hill in the mist and a deer standing in the middle of the road.  It was one of the neatest sights I've seen while running.  Spent about 5 -10 minutes approaching slowly and taking pictures with my iPhone.  The rest of the run was just great scenery, lots of small wildlife, and nice trail running.  In that 8 miles I never saw any signs of human activity.  Just me and the nature.  What a great way to wake up.
Hope all of your training is going well -- my running is going GREAT but I'm avoiding my swimming/biking I guess.  My September 13th HIM is going to kick my a$$.  Swim will be fine, especially in a wetsuit, bike is a really hilly course + it's long.  Oh well, I've got the marathon itch so it's all good!

There are some pretty fabulous places to see in this country.  Glad you had such a neat experience!

Dan, running in nature can be an awe-inspiring experience.

I'll never forget the time I saw a mature buck walk out into the road when I was biking at around 6am one morning in Ashland, Oregon. The air was crisp, and I could still see the moon in the sky, though the sun was up. He was as calm as could be, just walked into the road, stood there looking at me, then walked back into the wood. Magical.

There is a park that my wife and I go to. It has a small lake. In the evening there are always deer around it. If you don't make any sudden moves toward them you can run right past them on the path around the lake. They will just continue eating grass. There are times I am probably no more than fifty to a hundred feet away. Cool to watch.

I LOVE TRAILS!!!!! My favorite place to run is along this really rough cut trail through these river bottoms - it is hilly, stumpy, sandy, buggy, BUT it keeps my brain engaged the entire time and I don't even think about my knees hurting or old achy bones!!  My daughter and I ran through there a few weeks ago and a deer was running along side us off the trail about 20 feet....a few feet down the trail there was the biggest caterpiller I'd ever seen eating a buffet of the largest leaf his little feet would hold! It was like being Through the Looking Glass.

It's great fun and a killer workout!
