I was a member for a year and left about two years ago. The big problem: in my area, it was way "oversold." At the time of day when I needed to use the gym, there were parking hassles and worse, the equipment was either out of order or in use. I don't have time to "wait" for a treadmill at 7 am in the morning. I switched to LA Fitness and I like it much better. My advice: before joining any gym, make sure you visit it at the time of day you would normally go and check out things to make sure the gym isn't "oversold." Peak days at my gym are Tuesday through Thursday.

Was a member but they are like the McDonalds of gyms and I dumped them.
My complaints:
-once they have your money, you can't get their attention. For anything.
-very limited time of day for classes and limited roster of classes so I couldn't use them
-always trying to sell you something
-trainers aren't very knowledgeable on average
I went in the afternoon so I didn't have issues with over-crowding, but I know that can be a problem.
I think you can get a better experience for less money by joining your local Y.
My current gym costs more per month, but it's totally worth it to me. The trainers are more knowledgeable. They have 100 classes every week. People are helpful and will show you how to use the equipment. They have way more facilities including a separate lap pool. Even if you go during their rush hour, there are always free machines. They have every kind of sport and social and family activities. Free everything in the locker room (hair dryers, towels, q-tips, shampoo & conditioner, etc. etc.)
