Steelhead Here we Come!!!!!
Hey all,
Curt and I will be doing our first Ironman 70.3 this weekend in Benton Harbor, MI.
We are both doing the trakkers GPS testing. Here's the website again (same as Dan's Buffalo Springs) http://www.trakkersgps.com/beta/
I believe Curt starts in wave 11 and I start in wave 13 -- right now they're stating 5-7 minutes between waves so it means we'll be starting somewhere around 8 or so.
Losing that last weekend of training concerns me a little, lost a 15 mile run and a 60 mile ride but I've done 2 50 mile rides, 1 60 mile ride, an 8 mile/10 mile/13.1 mile run. Feel prepared and ready none the less for this thing.
Weather will be ideal: low 65/hi 81 and partly cloudy
Here's my nutrition plan if anybody wants to chime in:
Gonna try to get a gel in early on the bike and then one every 30-45 minutes. Total plan will be 4-6 depending on how I'm feeling. I can probably drain my aero water bottle (2.5 bottles of gatorade) in a little over an hour. That's the only thing I'm a little worried about. I'm in one of the last waves and if they run out of Gatorade/Water I may be hurting when I get back to the transition zone. Gonna get a Bento Box Friday (if not I'll wear a cycling jersey to hold my nutrition). I'll have a couple of Cliff Bars + sports beans just in case I can get more food in.
I can fit a couple of Gu's on my race belt and I'll have 2 flasks filled with water and 2 with gatorade but I'll try to use what's on the course and use my belt fluids as a reserve for when I need something between aide stations.
Last thing I'll try to take 1-2 Endurolyte tablets. I've only used them once but they seemed to help -- I didn't feel any 'mis-firing' during the long ride.
These taper weeks are hard!!!! Beautiful weather for riding and I'm just soaking in the sun, lol!

I will no longer be a spectator, a dreamer, a wonderer. I AM a doer; not only a goal setter, but a goal achiever. I will lead by example rather than word. I will "DARE GREATLY!"

Good luck to the steehead men! I'll be trakking!
Ok, some advice for the future since you really shouldn't do new stuff on race day:) Some of this CAN be applied to race day.
1. Don't eat in T1. Your HR will be to high to absorb anything. Get a few miles on the bike before you start taking in calories. Does your tri top have any pockets in it? I wouldn't waste time changing outfits unless you were doing an Ironman and had an assistant to help you change.
2. Are they making you guys wear your race number on the bike? In the IM races they do. If so, you can pin some gels on that instead of worrying about the bike jersey if you can't get the bento box. OR...if they have a nice expo, they make a fuel belt race belt that has elastic holders for your gels. I cal it my "ammo belt." I looks like you can put bullets in those slots.
3. endurolytes suck. You ever read the bottle? Only 40 MG per capsule. In the future your money is better spent on other products. For relatively the same price you can get a bottle of Salt Stick Caps. Those have about 215mg/sodium per capsule. Same # of pills in the bottle. 40mg is nothing. Huge $ waster.
4. Steelhead should NOT run out of gatorade. It's a long-running race. You are smart to have a back-up plan just in case. You might drop a bottle in water exchange.
Have you practiced bottle exchange?

Sherry thanks for the advice!
1) I've got a 1 piece 2XU tri-suit that has '2 pockets'. The problem is that I can only fit 1 gel in the pocket, the pocket is in a weird location -- on the hip which makes it hard to get to while on the bike, and they're elastic so it's hard to use them anyways. It's not a bad suit for sprints but for longer it just doesn't really work.
About eating -- I can force drink in me as I start the bike but it's always taken 10-15 minutes before I can get a gel in me. Never thought about the HR being too high to eat, but it that surely explains why!
2) Not sure, it is a M-DOT race so I'll assume so. Going be checking-in and doing the bike check tomorrow afternoon. Like my tri jersey I'm not a huge fan of my fuel belt. I just need more than what it can hold, got to get a different style.
3) Thanks for that advice -- I had 2 sample packets so instead of buying a bottle I'll just buy another packet or 2 for the race tomorrow. Really don't want to switch things, it's a new thing for me.
4) I agree, and no I haven't practiced bottle exchanges. Damn, and I've got a buddy who's doing the race too. Too late now, but we could've easily practiced that. Sure doing it once or twice would've helped.
So the shopping list at the expo is now: Bento Box, Salt Stick Caps, Fuel Belt, Tri-Jersey. Coming out of that with all those things people are going to wonder if I ever did any training or prep for this, lol.

Dan,
Thanks for this posting, I almost forgot about the 70.3 this weekend. NOT!!... I ended up taking today off of work, because I wasnt getting anything done yesterday at work. It will be great to finally meet up with you.
Don't worry about running out of GEF on the run course. Two years ago when my daughter and I volunteered at a run station. We came home with 2 cases of GEF, 5 cases of Gels, and 4 cases of Powerbars. The only thing we ran out of was the sponges.
I got in a nice easy 5 mile walk, because it felt like I should be doing something. Either tonight or tomorrow I will get in a nice easy OWS, just to make sure I remember how to swim. ha ha
Thinking I have my plan set, and all I have to do is follow it.
I'm sure more will follow, maybe a pre race report/picture from Dan and I from the Expo.
