5k scheduled for morning - what to eat before the race?

My past 5k's have always been late morning or afternoon or early evening.  This is my first morning one.

What do you eat before a morning race?   My band is tight in the morning and limits what I can eat.  Lately I've been doing protein shakes as breakfast.  Would that sustain me?

I've done four morning 5ks and drunk a protein shake before each one.  However, these were ones that I make using: 1 cup skim milk, 5 ice cubes 2 TB PB2, 2 TB sugar free chocolate syrup, and an EAS AdvantEDGE carb control Chocolate Fudge protein shake.  It has worked for me.  There's no way I can eat that early.  I am able after the race to eat some orange slices or 1/2 banana.  Good luck in the race!

I always have my normal breakfast before my events, including the 1 5k I did.

My normal breakfast is a protein shake.

Afterwards I usually end up with a protein bar and a banana or maybe I'll start them before the race if there is a long period of time between the shake and the start of the event.

Thanks girls!  I drank my protein shake on the way there and did have enough energy to run/walk.  I beat my last 5k time by almost a minute -- coming in at 41.18.   I'm still building up stamina on running outside continuously vs indoors.  (Last week on the treadmill - I ran for 20 minutes straight - but I can't do that outside yet).
